Nature / Park
Minoru Park is a park located on the site of a former horse-racing track and airstrip in Richmond, British Columbia. The Minoru Park's running track is often used for school competitions, such as track and field. The area is home to the Minoru Arenas, Minoru Track, Minoru Aquatic Centre and Richmond Cultural Centre (which in turn houses the Richmond Public Library's main branch, City of Richmond Archives, Richmond Art Gallery and Richmond Museum). All these facilities account for the bulk of community services offered by the city.Minoru was one of the first major aviation hubs in Western Canada.HistoryNamed after King Edward VII's Epsom Derby-winning Irish thoroughbred racehorse, Minoru, the area started out as a horse-racing track on August 21, 1909, to an audience of 7,000. (Minoru never raced in Richmond, however.)Almost one year later, on March 25, 1910, the first-ever Canadian airplane flight west of Winnipeg took off from Minoru Racetrack, with 3,500 witnesses on hand. The plane was manned by Charles K. Hamilton; he flew it from Minoru to New Westminster and back. This event is often credited for the Vancouver International Airport being located in Richmond rather than another municipality in Metro Vancouver.

  • Love visiting this park when I'm over nighting for trips in/out of Vancouver. Always try to stay near this area. Great little park with a pond, lots of squirrels, birds and blossoms and blooms.  more »
  • At this point, the Minoru area is under construction and really not terribly accessible. The plan for the future is positive. So, until summer has arrived, the visit to the Park should not be on your ...  more »

  • Awesome, park in central Richmond, has lots of amenities. On the north end is a beautiful, quiet garden and the south end has a running track and sports fields. There are also 2 playgrounds and a small exercise area (chin up bar). My favourite spot is the quaint garden at the north end, so beautiful and serene. Nice spot to relax or meditate. Some cute bunnies and squirrels, too.
  • Beautiful public park in Richmond. Excellent place to go for a walk. Very nice scenery and quiet setting. One of Richmond's best places for sure.
  • Very nice public park in Richmond. Super scenic with lots of wild animals. Great place to visit during the day.
  • Very charming little park near Richmond Public Library. The landscape is beautiful, especially the giant willow trees along the lake bank. There is a small island in the middle of the lake where hundreds of ducks come to nest in the spring. There are surprisingly a lot of wild life in the park. The lake is filed with giant carps (?), turtles, ducks, and Canada geese. There are tons of rabbits hopping around everywhere and owls and hawks that feed on the rabbits. I also spotted bats once in the park. It's such a cool place.
  • Beautiful park for walking and enjoying cultivated nature. Small play ground, but the kids enjoy it and it's shady.
