Glacier National Park, Revelstoke

#4 of 13 in Wildlife in Kootenay Rockies
Mount Revelstoke National Park is located adjacent to the city of Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada. The park is relatively small for a national park, covering 260km2. It is located in the Selkirk Mountains and was founded in 1914. Approximately 600,000 visitors enter Mount Revelstoke and nearby Glacier National Park each year.ClimateThe park contains a portion of one of the world's few inland temperate rain forests. Steep, rugged mountains can be found in a warm, moist climate. A variety of plant and animal life is typical with stands of old-growth Western Redcedar and Western Hemlock, a forest type which is rapidly declining outside of protected areas. The park's inland rainforest also has an isolated population of banana slugs which marks the eastern boundary of their distribution in North America.FaunaThis national park protects a small herd of the threatened woodland caribou as well as providing habitats for grizzly bears, black bears, moose, martens, coyotes, a variety of bats, several species of shrews, voles, mice, wolverines, and mountain goats.

the Illicilliwaet Campground is the source and starting point to at least 6 different hikes. The best one for us was the Abbott Ridge trail, it's quick up and the 360 degree glacier view from the top ...  more »

Hikes to do in this park, not overrun with tourists by bus. Yet from the beginning of July at less than 2000 neves m! Abbott Ridge hiking interesting for sportsmen, but we had a sky blocked by smoke from forest fires, many in the summer in British Colombia.

In July, we spent a whole day to many trails in the Glacier National Park to walk. Beautiful and the trails are impressive: Hemlock Grove Boardwalk skirt guard trail loop Brook trail Illecillewaet, "Meet the Water Trail" especially cool is the bear Creek falls trail. After the man always first uphill goes, it's different here. The sight is great from the waterfall. The spray sprays quite nicely. The way back is somewhat exhausting. Because you have the way up again. Trained the muscles well. The sight of the glaciers, as far as we could see they were awesome. An indescribable nature borne by silence and the sound of rivers and streams. You shouldn't take your time and soak everything in. The Park is worth a visit and will be long remembered us. Tip: mosquito repellent should be taken even at low temperatures.

Where to stay in Revelstoke

Revelstoke's position on the Columbia River endows it with scenic vistas, and most of the accommodations in town take advantage of this by offering waterfront views. Stay at one of the many bed and breakfasts, inns, hotels, or lodges on the east side of the river to make the most of the scenery. If you visit Revelstoke to ski--between November and April--stay south of the town center, in a ski chalet at the foot of Revelstoke Mountain. There, you'll be perfectly placed to catch a gondola up the mountain and shred down its slopes.
