Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, Quebec City

From its single white steeple to its grey stone exterior, Notre-Dame-des-Victoires evokes all the charm you'd expect from the old part of the city. Construction began in 1687 in the Colonial French style, underlined by the intricate white and gold details on the interior. The interior pays tribute to Quebec faith and history with representative sculptures and motives throughout, and the naval ship suspended from the ceiling is not to be missed. A British bombardment destroyed the original church, leading to its 1816 rebuild. The church has since been named a National Historic Site of Canada. • We stopped here as part of a tour, and it is beautiful on the inside. This church has an interesting history in regards to the battles in Quebec City, it's worth researching before you go!  more »
  • We were able to attend Mass on New Year's Day. The priest had a great sense of humor and had a great homily about PEACE. It was very nice to among the locals to celebrate this Mass.  more »
  • It is nicely located with a very small plaza (and a tree in winter) with a nice view, although not spectacular.  more »

  • This picture shows one of the two Holy Doors outside of the Vatican. The church was granted the Holy Door n 2014 by the Pope for its place in the history of Quebec and Canada. The church, Notre Dame Des Victoires, commemorates the two victories of Les Quebecois over attacks by the Revolutionary Army of the American Colonies in 1775, and the US forces in 1810. Without those victories there probably would be no French spoken in Canada. Vive Les Quebecois!
  • A beautiful church full of history. Stay for the service.
  • Beautiful Church. Original built to dedicate baby Jesus

Where to stay in Quebec City

Most accommodations cluster on the west side of the St. Lawrence River, with the city's split-level old town offering the widest range of options and best access to top attractions. Stay in the upper town to be close to the castle and enjoy views over the river. What the lower town lacks in panoramas, it makes up for in historic charm and access to riverside cafes and restaurants. If you want a less-touristy experience, consider the up-and-coming neighborhood of St. Roch, whose cafes, bars, restaurants, and artistic spaces make it an alternative traveler's paradise.
