Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, Quebec City

From its single white steeple to its grey stone exterior, Notre-Dame-des-Victoires evokes all the charm you'd expect from the old part of the city. Construction began in 1687 in the Colonial French style, underlined by the intricate white and gold details on the interior. The interior pays tribute to Quebec faith and history with representative sculptures and motives throughout, and the naval ship suspended from the ceiling is not to be missed. A British bombardment destroyed the original church, leading to its 1816 rebuild. The church has since been named a National Historic Site of Canada. Not huge but impressive considering when and how it was built. It did not open until noon but it was worth visiting and was free. We only lingered for 10 minutes or so but the church is located in Pla...  more »

Although small, the Church is rich in the history of its past. Gold dominates, especially in the heart. A model of a ship with sails testifies to the fervor of the sailors.

It's free to visit. $2 donations will help to maintain the church.

Met Flake of Rammstein after visiting the church on july 16, 2016. He was doing his ritual walk around the city and my girlfriend recognized him even though being dressed very casual. Met him in front of the church! He was kind enough to pose for a picture with my girlfriend! Very nice man. Miracle indeed!

Where to stay in Quebec City

Most accommodations cluster on the west side of the St. Lawrence River, with the city's split-level old town offering the widest range of options and best access to top attractions. Stay in the upper town to be close to the castle and enjoy views over the river. What the lower town lacks in panoramas, it makes up for in historic charm and access to riverside cafes and restaurants. If you want a less-touristy experience, consider the up-and-coming neighborhood of St. Roch, whose cafes, bars, restaurants, and artistic spaces make it an alternative traveler's paradise.
