Small area with a large variety of plantings. Colorful even in late summer. Spent an hour walking the grounds and delighted at every new area. A wonderful butterfly sculpture made of plants was a high...  more »

Open to the public since 1978, the University garden Roger Van den Hende, the name of its designer the Botany Professor Roger Van den Hende of Laval University, is not far from 4000 species and cultivars of plants that can grow in the climate of the region of Quebec. With an area of 6 hectares, the garden is arranged in a pedagogical purpose (arboretum, rose garden, herbacetum, Ericacetum, etc.) but the arrangements and facilities (pergola, water garden, mosaiculture, etc.) can not only charm the visitor and that the end of the Spring (in particular the collection of rhododendrons) until autumn where flowers and fruits offer miles colours. Excellent place to decide on the plants you want to implant in its own garden. A section documenting the art of composting. Benches were placed all over the place for relaxation as well as troughs and picnic tables. Into your market tour (tour 1 to 2 hours depending on your interest). Free entry but $ 2 donation suggested to help with the upkeep.

I went to take pictures. There are bird feeders. The garden is small but still has a nice variety of flower. At this time of year, a lot of tree and shrub in bloom. It is possible to have a guided tour. Free entry but it was suggested we make a donation. I will definitely go back a different time of year. I do not consider this place as a tourist attraction.

A beautiful garden to visit absolutely. Collections of plants and trees in other countries, free entry, but a small donation of $1.00 or more, to help keep it.

Where to stay in Quebec City

Most accommodations cluster on the west side of the St. Lawrence River, with the city's split-level old town offering the widest range of options and best access to top attractions. Stay in the upper town to be close to the castle and enjoy views over the river. What the lower town lacks in panoramas, it makes up for in historic charm and access to riverside cafes and restaurants. If you want a less-touristy experience, consider the up-and-coming neighborhood of St. Roch, whose cafes, bars, restaurants, and artistic spaces make it an alternative traveler's paradise.
