Cathedral Grove, Port Alberni

(4.8/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Marvel at towering trees and lush foliage at Cathedral Grove, a living remnant of the island's ancient forests. Pay a visit to this section of MacMillan Provincial Park to see colossal Douglas-fir trees, the largest of which stand at a height of more than 75 m (250 ft) and feature a circumference of 9 m (29 ft). Wander along the network of walking trails that crisscross the area and admire these old-growth evergreens, some of which are nearly eight centuries old. Keep an eye out for falling branches and animals, such as bears, elk, cougar, and owls. • Great walk nice and cool in the summer, beautiful in the winter. There are bathrooms, and also wide paths for wheel chairs. Very poor parking which is small and side of highway.  more »
  • So much old growth all in the same spot No wonder why Mr MacMillan saved this spot. This is a must see stop. The lake is awesome too! Test your eyes and look for the old train trestles on the far side...  more »

  • Very magical place with senior, adult, young and baby trees. If you are looking for a short easy walk after a bathroom stop, definitively come here.
  • Beautiful forest but if you're a PNW native, you see thesekinds of trees pretty regularly. A nice little walk and dog friendly (on leash of course)
  • A wonderful place to visit .. It can get wet and cold from time to time. Still well worth it to stop and enjoy the energy of the forest.
  • Wonderful walk through the forest It was cold, humid, quiet. Walk with trees that are hundreds of years old.
  • Amazing old growth Cedar forest. Super busy especially in the summer but worth the stop!
