Historic Site Landmark
Marvel at the wonders of physics and early 20th century technology when visiting Peterborough Lift Lock. This particular lock is the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world at a height of 19.8 m (65 ft), almost 60 feet higher than other conventional locks of the time. It functions purely by gravity, with one caisson acting as a counterweight for the other. Visit the information center which offers interactive simulations and historical exhibits about the lock’s construction. Take a lunch or dinner cruise along the waterway on a riverboat, where you can experience the ascent and descent for yourself. A visit to Peterborough Lift Lock represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Peterborough vacation planner to plot your vacation.

  • Bought a groupon, and took the tour, was pretty cool, a great lesson to see how it works, the boat cruise was fun, and the captain was very informative.  more »

  • The Liftlock, combined with the new visitors centre and nearby Peterborough Museum and Archives is becoming a nice day trip. Not a lot for kids but they're trying. Nice picnic area but not a lot of shade. There's a park on the hilltop with best view in the city.
  • Amazing feat of engineering. Was a pleasure to see. The visitor's centre is clean and well-run and the staff are very informed and helpful.
  • It has a great view. It's the biggest lift lock in the world
  • One of the nice art of work, the biggest lift lock in Canada, must see it.
  • One of my favourite places to visit in Peterborough. There are several picnic areas on the west side of the canal and a small free museum. Definitely have to go through the Lift Locks on a boat if you have the opportunity.
