Peterborough Lift Lock, Peterborough

(4.7/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
Marvel at the wonders of physics and early 20th century technology when visiting Peterborough Lift Lock. This particular lock is the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world at a height of 19.8 m (65 ft), almost 60 feet higher than other conventional locks of the time. It functions purely by gravity, with one caisson acting as a counterweight for the other. Visit the information center which offers interactive simulations and historical exhibits about the lock’s construction. Take a lunch or dinner cruise along the waterway on a riverboat, where you can experience the ascent and descent for yourself. A visit to Peterborough Lift Lock represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Peterborough vacation planner to plot your vacation.

  • I went in the winter time so the lift was not active, but it was still cool to see how it works. You really don't grasp the size until you see it in person. Well worth checking out
  • Great for the whole family. During the trip the captain will share jokes and historical facts.Very entertaining and very scenic cruse from the heart of the city.
  • This is a family run business that is done very well. Jamie the guide made this the most memorable experience for my son. We were there in August and my son had never been on a boat. It was his 4th bi...  more »

  • It was beautiful when we visited. We had perfect timing to see how the lift works and the staff were very friendly to inform us and teach us about the lift.
  • One of my favourite places to visit in Peterborough. There are several picnic areas on the west side of the canal and a small free museum. Definitely have to go through the Lift Locks on a boat if you have the opportunity.
  • Super cool engineering feat, the lift lock is one of only a couple in the world.
  • A great historical trip down the lock
  • The Lift Lock is an incredible and beautiful piece of engineering. In my opinion, it is most beautiful in the Autumn!
