Marvel at the wonders of physics and early 20th century technology when visiting Peterborough Lift Lock. This particular lock is the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world at a height of 19.8 m (65 ft), almost 60 feet higher than other conventional locks of the time. It functions purely by gravity, with one caisson acting as a counterweight for the other. Visit the information center which offers interactive simulations and historical exhibits about the lock’s construction. Take a lunch or dinner cruise along the waterway on a riverboat, where you can experience the ascent and descent for yourself. A visit to Peterborough Lift Lock represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Peterborough vacation planner to plot your vacation.

  • One of my favourite places to visit in Peterborough. There are several picnic areas on the west side of the canal and a small free museum. Definitely have to go through the Lift Locks on a boat if you have the opportunity.
  • It was beautiful when we visited. We had perfect timing to see how the lift works and the staff were very friendly to inform us and teach us about the lift.
  • The Lift Lock is an incredible and beautiful piece of engineering. In my opinion, it is most beautiful in the Autumn!
  • The Peterborough lift lock is well preserved, and the museum nearby might not be big, but it presented the history of the lock and the people who worked on it well.
  • Super cool engineering feat, the lift lock is one of only a couple in the world.
