  • A must on your course, especially for lunch. The terrace is wonderful and the view breathtaking. The food is excellent and the portions generous. The wines are very good and the tasting room is beautiful and modern. To do!

  • I bought a Viognier from Poplar Grove, and I felt I had to because the winery itself was so impressive, the kind of place you shoot films or stage weddings at. That was verified the afternoon we were there as a handful of women draped in white and men clad in kilts strode by us on their way to a hill where vows would no doubt be shared. I glanced at my girlfriend as we enjoyed our meal at the Vanilla Pod and she returned a gaze clearly conveying I shouldn’t get any ideas. The experience at Poplar Grove begins, like so many, with a very expensive door, one of those traditional and yet expensive entrances you admire, take a photo, and ultimately pass through. Inside sits a less conventional arrangement. Instead of an angular wine bar where several hosts can work their trade, there are several crescent-shaped wine tasting pods. How novel and welcoming. The winery itself though somewhat antiseptic is also spacious and artistic when it needs to be, from the wavy and almost disorientating wine racks to the glass wall overlooking one of the best views of the region. Outside sits the Vanilla Pod restaurant, to be explored in its own review. The winery checks every box required to being a good winery. It even supplies one of those expansive tasting lounges dominated by a single table for larger groups. The hosts themselves are delightful and knowledgeable. The experience was agreeable, leading to a crisis of conscience. I felt compelled to buy at least one bottle. I guess such an impressive display does lead to an inevitable guilt trip. Admittedly, the wine isn’t bad, just not terribly exciting. The selection is massive, over twenty varietals, including magnum and double magnums, and maybe if it had been earlier in our journey, we might have picked up more. We had journeyed from Osoyoos to Kelowna, visiting 60 wineries and collecting 120 bottles. And only one was from Poplar Grove. Poplar Grove didn’t impress enough to warrant a larger purchase. Not only that but on a second journey only a few weeks ago, although we stopped at the parking lot to show our friends that signature door and breathtaking view, we didn’t even go inside. And there’s still the Wines of BC that opened only weeks after our return at our local Save-On. But the reason to go to wine country is to experience the wineries, as much as or more than the actual wine, making Poplar Grove the opposite of Monster Vineyards just down the hill. With the latter, their wine is amazing, but the winery is mediocre. This is a review of the location, and Poplar Grove is worth the visit.
  • Great white wines, red wines were good but not exceptional, view is amazing and service is good although a bit unnecessarily snobbish all around, if you are in the area is definitely worth the visit you get to see all of penticton
  • Wonderful place with really well made wines. The view from the winery is second to none. You've got all of Okanagan lake and Penticton at your feet. Just a phenomenal place to go for food and wine on the patio in summer.
  • Breathtaking view paired with fantastic high quality upscale dining. Elegant outside patio will allow you to overlook the city while enjoying the potato cakes with a avocado salsa feta cheese compote.
  • Great food and wine, amazing views, a bit pricy. Service has always been good. Would recommend for a special meal out.

Where to stay in Penticton

Penticton's position between two lakes means that you're likely to enjoy waterfront views no matter where you stay. The town center, on the southern shore of Okanagan Lake, represents the most popular place to stay, with a host of motels and resorts offering views over the water. Head south down Skaha Lake Road--itself littered with accommodations--and you'll find quieter inns and motels offering vistas over the smaller but equally scenic Skaha Lake. Head just out of town along the east shore of Okanagan Lake and you can stay in a bed and breakfast or guesthouse among the region's wineries.
