Notre Dame Basilica, Ottawa

(4.6/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
Step into the intricately designed Notre Dame Basilica, the oldest and largest church in Canada's capital city. At first glance the exterior may seem somewhat ordinary, with the exception of the reflective tin steeples visible from around the city. However, as you enter the church you're met with striking royal gold and blue features, such as the grand vaulted roof, a high altar, stained-glass windows, and a pipe organ boasting more than 1,000 pipes. Plan your Notre Dame Basilica visit and explore what else you can see and do in Ottawa using our Ottawa trip itinerary builder.

  • What a lovely mass, friendly parishioners made me feel welcome, as I was on my own. The sun was shining on the marble pillars at this time in early March, beautiful.  more »
  • Notre Dame is a such a beautiful Basilica! The inside is definitely much prettier than the outside but it is definitely worth paying to $6 to go in.  more »
  • This is a great church to stop and take a look in. One of the most beautiful buildings in Ottawa. I was surprised that we had such churches in Canada.  more »

  • Where: Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica - Montreal, Quebec What: A Cathedral downtown Ottawa. How was it: It was great, we got tickets to see the choir for Christmas Eve. Obviously it was the best time to be there and enjoy the sounds, lights and beautiful structure ! You should definitely try to get some tickets for this place, totally worth it ! Grade: Eli = 5, Serge = 4+ Recommend: Yeah, it's a nice place to visit in general.
  • I am not a catholic so was a bit new for me, but people were welcoming and the service was good. Lots of singing. Father did touch on US election and related it to faith. Was good to hear.
  • Though not a religious person, I always enjoy visiting churches wherever I go, especially in Europe. I'll admit being very impressed with this very well maintained and cared for cathedral. It is simply astounding! The details are wonderful and the stained glass magical! A must see!
  • Great place to visit and also attend services. Been here for a few services and enjoyed the atmosphere of the occasion. Also had the privilege of having our son's baptism here. Will be returning for other services!
  • Worth a visit, even for non-believers. The European-style architecture is just stunning. Great location as well - across the street is the National Gallery of Canada and other visitor attractions. Free entrance.
