National War Memorial, Ottawa

#12 of 272 in Things to do in Ottawa
Visit National War Memorial, a cenotaph built to remember the sacrifice of Canadian men and women who have fought in times of war, who are fighting now, and who will fight in the future. Depicting uniformed figures passing under a granite arch, the memorial seeks not to glorify war, but to focus on the dutiful response from members of the Canadian armed forces. Officially unveiled in 1939, it was initially dedicated to those who took part in the First World War. The dedications have grown over time to include subsequent wars, with the memorial becoming a timeless symbol of honor, duty, and memory. • A beautiful memorial to those who served our country with the grave of the unknown soldier in front in recognition for those who never made it home. At the heart of the city it is definitely a must see.
  • Beautiful park with a huge and impressive statue. Usually, during the day, they have ongoing ceremonies of guards marching around and playing bagpipes. You can walk or sit in the benches, relax or watch the event.
  • I have been on parade at the Memorial when I was in the 30th Field Artillery Regiment. I have also been there many times on Remembrance Day, to see my father play the Bagpipes with the Cameron Highlanders Pipe and Drums. Always a Beautiful memory!
  • Must see if walking in area. Architecture is excellent and it represents Canada's war history well. Tomb of Unknown Soldier is here as well to pay your respects. Remembrance Day ceremony is held here and it is worth the visit.
  • So much to see here, and so much history. With young children it's hard to get through it all, so we had to real it up for them. My husband was in the military, as well as his grandfather, so it was really neat to check out. Well done.
