#12 of 341 in Things to do in Ottawa
Visit National War Memorial, a cenotaph built to remember the sacrifice of Canadian men and women who have fought in times of war, who are fighting now, and who will fight in the future. Depicting uniformed figures passing under a granite arch, the memorial seeks not to glorify war, but to focus on the dutiful response from members of the Canadian armed forces. Officially unveiled in 1939, it was initially dedicated to those who took part in the First World War. The dedications have grown over time to include subsequent wars, with the memorial becoming a timeless symbol of honor, duty, and memory. • I have been to Ottawa many times, but this was only the second time I was there on November 11. As a Canadian, I would encourage everyone to visit during this time of Rememberance. There is a peaceful...  more »

  • The everyday of people from our dignitaries, and royals to the you-and-me Canadians are drawn to this creative downtown focal point.. it is here that we have celebrated the collective passing of those who have served selflessly.. It is here that an unarmed military guardsman was senselessly killed.. with that we were dragged into a criterion of political questions.. the personal (of the Cirillo family) became the political for many Canadians. How do we balance the nuance of mental illness, with acts of political harm?! This has now become a place of more than memorialized art. ...it is a place to contemplate with others!
  • Very interesting to visit and see what helped our great country become what we are. The early settlers had many trials and their weaponry is shown, right through the ages to what is current. Interesting to see the evolution of the tanks.
  • I was there for the 100th Aniversary of the First World War battle at Vimy Ridge. Very moving for anyone with family history tied to Canada's.
  • You must visit the memorial and pay respect to our fallen soldiers. Such a nice structure to see
  • Beautiful park with a huge and impressive statue. Usually, during the day, they have ongoing ceremonies of guards marching around and playing bagpipes. You can walk or sit in the benches, relax or watch the event.
