National War Memorial, Ottawa

#13 of 278 in Things to do in Ottawa
Visit National War Memorial, a cenotaph built to remember the sacrifice of Canadian men and women who have fought in times of war, who are fighting now, and who will fight in the future. Depicting uniformed figures passing under a granite arch, the memorial seeks not to glorify war, but to focus on the dutiful response from members of the Canadian armed forces. Officially unveiled in 1939, it was initially dedicated to those who took part in the First World War. The dedications have grown over time to include subsequent wars, with the memorial becoming a timeless symbol of honor, duty, and memory. • This is an amazing statue that pays tribute to Canadians who fought in various world wars. There is a changing of the guard during summer months. It is very close to the parliament buildings and has plenty of space for visitors to view up close.
  • Clean and fun! A respected monument to those who served. Loved our experience during Canada Day.
  • What a fantastic place. There is no way I could put in words what this place means to me so I will simply say how great it is Canada has a like this for people to visit and remember the sacrifices our great country has made.
  • Beautifully modern building. A lovely memorial to those who have passed and still serve. Very moving individual stories. Brilliant chronological walk through Canadian military history. Loads of interactive displays. Very helpful staff.
  • Beautiful structure... One of the must visit places in Ottawa... Surrounded by various restaurants and bars... Makes you feel patriotic
