Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa
(4.2/5 based on 65+ reviews on the web)
The Central Experimental Farm is an agricultural facility, working farm, and research centre of the Research Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. As the name indicates, this farm is centrally located in and now surrounded by the City of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The farm is a National Historic Site of Canada and most buildings are protected and preserved as heritage buildings. The CEF original intent was to perform scientific research for improvement in agricultural methods and crops. While such research is still being conducted, the park-like atmosphere of the CEF has become an important place of recreation and education for the residents of Ottawa. Furthermore, over the years several other departments and agencies have encroached onto the CEF property, such as Natural Resources Canada, National Defence, and the Ottawa Civic Hospital .The CEF is bordered by the Rideau Canal to the east, Prince of Wales Drive to the South-East, Baseline Road to the south, and Merivale and Fisher Roads to the west, and Carling Avenue to the north.

  • The farm is a true gem within the Ottawa community. There are very few major cities in the world that have a fully operating, large scale farm within the core of their City. What's better is that the public is able to walk throughout the farm and talk with the staff. Cannot say enough good things about this place.
  • Can't even figure out where to go. Drove there with my two young kids, ended up on tiny 30km/h ring roads that did nothing, couldn't even find the damn entrance. Ended up turning around & driving back home. The lack of any kind of signage made for a wasted trip. I guess if you're familiar with the area, you might know what to do, but this place is anything but tourist-friendly.
  • What a beautiful place for a walk or visiting the buildings. I walked from Carling Ave and loved the Victorian style architecture plus the grounds.
  • Some animals look distressed and sad but that is somewhat to be expected, especially in the Diary Barn. The animals are cute. I suggest asking a lot of questions in the different barns. The staff is very manageable.
  • This was an okay place to go on a date, but it would be better for those unacquainted with the farm. Also it was mostly walking around and reading. That being said we missed the demonstrations so maybe that's why. Website could be more helpful as I found it lacking in information. I was also a little put off that we are supporting GMO's. Would also have liked better look at chickens.
