Niagara Apothecary Museum, Niagara-on-the-Lake

4.4
#2 of 10 in Museums in Niagara-on-the-Lake
Frozen in time since 1869, Niagara Apothecary Museum remains one of the few examples of a late nineteenth century apothecary. Authentically maintained in working condition, the establishment opened in 1820 and operated until 1964, declared a national historic site of Canada four years later. Inhabiting a single storey unit, it's Georgian facade, black walnut and butternut fixtures, and crystal gasoliers have all been painstakingly restored to accurately portray the era. Fast forward to today and a visit to the apothecary provides a step back in time, stocked from floor to ceiling with bottles of miracle cures, surrounding an ornately carved dispensary from where the pharmacist concocted his medicines. • This was a very interesting place to visit. It was like stepping back in time. It only takes a few minutes to stop in and imagine what medicine must have been like long ago.  more »

  • Really interesting little spot we stumbled upon. It's free to take a look although they appreciate donations. Lots of historical medical items to see. Totally recommend if you're in the area.
  • Interesting place. Wish it had better hours.
  • Interesting place with lots of history. You may recognize it from the Trisha Romance painting.
