Built along ancient First Nations trade routes, the town of Newmarket was founded in 1801 as a Quaker settlement.

Originally a fur trading post, “New” Market was the largest farmer’s market in the area, and quickly became a centre for agriculture, commerce and small industry.

Newmarket was also the heart of the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837 and many local area residents marched on Toronto.

The Town of Newmarket is rich in history, evident in the bustling historical downtown area, home to locally and independently owned shops, businesses and restaurants

  • I visit main street often. Always find something to do. The restaurants are nice and the food is good. It's a quaint area which is nice to walk up and down. The summer farmers market is a must. Word o...  read more »
  • My wife and I just love the walk down Main Street! All the old buildings, flowers and Patriotic Canadian Flags. And fairy lake- bliss

  • Small but nice. Lots of vegetables, some specialty stands. Tasty pizza made fresh (it's a portable wood burning pizza oven). Has a large wading pool with chairs and live music. Also a short walk from Newmarket's 'historical' street with lots of little restaurants. What with a large park near by and all, there is a surprising lack of ice-cream shops to cater to the summer crowds.
  • Always a good time; great vendors, prices, and selections
  • Great selection!
