Tunnels of Moose Jaw, Moose Jaw

4.4
Explore the underground world of Tunnels of Moose Jaw, a historic labyrinth of subterranean pathways now open for tours. Constructed in 1908, the tunnels originally acted as an underground steam system, though they soon became abandoned. Escaping persecution during the Yellow Peril, or prosecution during a round of government-led head taxes, many Chinese railway workers and their families would hide in the tunnels, with whole families forming an underground community living in horrendous conditions. During the 1920s, the tunnels were central to local rum-running operations, with Al Capone believed to have visited at some point prior to his 1931 conviction. Two tours, one relating to Chinese immigrants and the other to the prohibition era, operate with convincing sets, artifacts, and staff members in character. • The tunnels are very interesting and a real good experience. The guides portray the people they are representing very well. I really recommend these tours. The history is very interesting.  more »

  • We took both tours. The Passage to Fortune was very informative. The Chicago connection was less informative and more fun shenanigans. The price was okay for both tours and it's the main reason to stop in Moose Jaw. The mechanical guy playing the piano in the Chicago connection was very life like. And the guy who plays Gus did an outstanding job. It was really the employees that made this experience so good.
  • Great little historical tour. Funny, personable tour guides. Learned, laughed, enjoyed. Not wheelchair accessible and a challenge for anyone who had difficulty with stairs. But, for everyone else, well worth the price of admission. Do both yours if you have time. Better bang for your buck.
  • Such a great fun tour, its been a few years and I still remember this tour whenever I see a movie about the Prohibition. Great atmosphere and interesting stories from history.
  • An amazing experience. Do both tours for sure! Gives you such an amazing in depth knowledge of history. Went there for our 7 year anniversary and it was top notch.
  • OMG. I had heard we had to stop for a tour. Only had time for one tour and it was AMAZING. So worth it! My only regret is that it would have been nice to take a few photos so as to be able to show friends and family. Took the Chinese tour - coming from the Human rights museum in Winnipeg, it was a perfect complement to the museum visit. I'll definitely be trying the prohibition tour the next time!
