St. Patrick's Basilica, Montreal

4.7
Known for its historic link to Irish-Canadian culture, St. Patrick's Basilica offers grand architecture and ornaments in an active place of worship. The building showcases gothic revival architecture on the outside. Once inside, view the 25 m (82 ft) columns all carved from the same white oak. The decorations feature a mixture of Irish shamrocks and French fleur de lys. The ten bells, also known as St. Patricks Chimes, are a popular draw, as one was originally cast in 1774 and used in Notre Dame. • Amazing building which better reflects what these buildings looked like not to long after their construction. The grandeur and the scale are amazing without the wear and tare  more »
  • We popped in here on 12/31 and it was completely empty other than us. I expected it to be fun of people. Well worth visiting, I would count on 30 minutes.  more »
  • It is evident that the Catholic congregation had the very best of everything that encompasses a parish. The detail of the interior is worth a visit.  more »

  • One of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. Loved it!
  • The place was really beautiful. There were a lot stained classes, that was so colorful and pretty. I have been there on Sunday, so pipe organ was played by someone. That sound was so cool!
  • Serenity , Gorgeous Park In the Back , Peacefull and Calm During the Days , Just as Popping during the Night
  • A little smaller but a lot quieter here. We were the only ones there while we inside. Very beautiful inside. Lots of paintings.
  • Where: Saint Patrick's Basilica What: A Roman Catholic church in downtown Montreal How was it: It a great place in a great setting. We enjoy going there to see the squirrels running around in the park. We also like going inside to walk around and sit for a few minutes. The downside inside is they've converted all candles to electric, it just doesn't have the same feel as real candles. But we understand the level of work comes with it. Grade: Eli = 5, Serge = 5 Recommend: Yes, we enjoy visiting every now and again.

Where to stay in Montreal

If beautiful architecture and views over the water appeal, stay in the historic neighborhood of Vieux Montreal (Old Montreal), where you'll be a stone's throw from the best attractions in the city. If modern convenience is more important to you, look for accommodations in the downtown neighborhood of Centre-Ville, or head a bit farther out to the artsy district of Plateau Mont-Royal. LGBTI visitors might want to consider staying in The Village, Montreal's famously progressive hub of gay and lesbian culture.
