Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel, Montreal

(4.5/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
One of the city's oldest religious landmarks, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel welcomed generations of sailors and settlers arriving at the port. The 18th-century stone church stands on the site of an earlier 17th-century chapel. In the 19th century, seafarers expressed their gratitude to Our Lady of Good Help by offering models of ships, hung in the interior of the chapel. Today, you can see the votive gifts in the adjacent museum, together with dolls made by nuns arranged to form 58 scenes from the life of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys--the patroness of the original chapel. Climb a narrow spiral staircase to get to the roof, which offers scenic views of the old town. • Cette ancienne église se situe en plein dans le vieux Montréal dans l'ancien quartier français, très pittoresque et plein de boutiques, de cafés et de restaurant.À voir.
  • This is a very historical church and when you walk in you feel transported back to the days of Champlain. This section of Old Montreal is steeped in history with cobblestoned streets.
  • Doesn't matter what denomination you are, this is a spiritual work of art. Staff inside are mostly friendly and knowledgable too, which helps give context to all of what's inside

  • Where: Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel - Montreal, Quebec What: A small Chapel in the Old Port. How was it: This Chapel is really cute. It's really small and charming inside. You can light candles as opposed to the new electric version. It's rarely open when we are nearby, but when it is we try to go inside for some minutes. Grade: Eli = 5, Serge = 4+ Recommend: Yeah, the structure on the outside is nice and the inside is really charming.
  • An important destination for those interested in the early history of Montreal and New France. The chapel is a must see -- the museum optional.
  • Really nice museum with excellent audio guide to help you understand the history
  • Meh. I wish they'd have just said "you're paying for the visit/view from the roof", because that's the reality of it. I'd include the chapel but you can see that without paying for a tour. The "museum" is pretty laughable. 1/6th of it is a room of miniatures acting out the founder's story. Quaint, but ultimately unfulfilling. I certainly don't mind supporting a historical site, but the price of admission seems way out of line considering there are LOTS of other sites charging less and giving more.
  • The oldest church in Montreal, it's incredible beautiful!
