Notre Dame Basilica, Montreal

(4.5/5 based on 11,000+ reviews on the web)
See the jewel of Canada's religious heritage at Notre Dame Basilica, one of the world's most dramatic examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The majestic church boasts hundreds of intricately carved wooden statues in a grand interior that holds up to 4,000 worshippers--all under a blue ceiling speckled with gold stars. Instead of depicting religious scenes, the stained glass windows narrate the history of Montreal and offer a glimpse into the city's development over the centuries. The church regularly hosts musical events, with the main concert taking place at Christmas, when thousands attend the performance of Handel's "Messiah." • It is a beautiful church with superb architecture in the dome. Must visit if you are in Montreal for a tour.  more »
  • Outside the Basilica looks very much like those that can be seen in Europe, but once inside: WAW Super. A breathtaking. By far the most beautiful I've visited.

  • Beautiful, wonderful. Although only open Saturday and Sunday and charge expensive to enter, is worth the visit!

  • Where: Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal What: A Basilica near the old port of Montreal How was it: This Basilica is in a very special setting. The square outside is quite remarkable. It looks great during the day and when it's lit up at night. We were fortunate to visit for Christmas eve. It's quite special with the snow and blue lights. This place looks great any time of the year. Grade: Eli = 5, Serge = 5 Recommend: Yes, we like visiting when we are in the area !
  • Amazingly beautiful place to visit! Lots of history behind it and I would highly recommend joining the guided tour, which is provided in many languages. This is also where Celine Dion got married! The washroom in the basement is also really clean despite the number of tourists that go through there every day. $5 for admission is reasonable.
  • It is $5/person for the tour which is a short 15 minute history of the bascila with a group of about 45 other people.  The tour is informative and afterwards you can take as much time as you want exploring.  There is a longer 1 hr tour that my wife and I were interested in, but it was sold out, so if you want to get it you have to go first thing in the morning.  Your normal ticket is good for the whole day which is nice because we came back in the afternoon for a really nice organ performance.  Check the calendar ahead of time and if you can coordinate it with one of their events then you'll really get the best deal.  Since there are so many tours this is not quiet like the Cathedral downtown.  This is much more touristy.  Expect to spend between 1 and 2 hours here.
  • The church is absolutely stunning! It's $5 a person, but reasonable for the amazing views inside. (Just an FYI they were not able to honor the USD exchange rate). I was however, put off by a very rude employee here. We had paid $2 to light 2 candles (as they're a $1 each). He approached us and started counting the candels, exclaiming they were a dollar a piece. We speak no French and his English broken, but we tried to explain we already paid. He kept saying "it's a dollar a candle". We had paid it so we just smiled and nodded and walked off. Not impressed by his attitude, but a very nice visit all around.
  • Awesome building but I only could see it by night. Next time I plan to take the tour. Wonderful area for a quiet night stroll through historic streets.
