Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal

4.7
#1 of 1,023 in Historic Sites in Canada
See the jewel of Canada's religious heritage at Notre-Dame Basilica, one of the world's most dramatic examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The majestic church boasts hundreds of intricately carved wooden statues in a grand interior that holds up to 4,000 worshippers--all under a blue ceiling speckled with gold stars. Instead of depicting religious scenes, the stained glass windows narrate the history of Montreal and offer a glimpse into the city's development over the centuries. The church regularly hosts musical events, with the main concert taking place at Christmas, when thousands attend the performance of Handel's "Messiah." • Beautiful architecture on the outside. It's even more striking on the inside. They only take cash at the ticket counter so please make sure you have it on you. The ticket is good for an entire day so hold onto it in case you want to come back again. That's what I did. The guide was great. She was engaging in her stories. I came back later in the day to listen to the organ. That was also a great experience.
  • I attended the light show and really enjoyed it. The show starts out slow but it does get better. I def think it was worth the cost. Make some phone calls if you'd like to visit during the day, we tried to visit but there was a wedding going on. Not too disappointed because we had booked the night light show, but it still would've been cool to look around with normal lighting.
  • Incredible sight both inside and out. Its always packed with tourists but once you start looking at the ornate architecture they all seem to disappear. This is really incredible to see whether you are religious or not. This is my second time going and it is still mind blowing.
  • This amazing church was built in 1656 and was such a grand and impressive building. Located in Old Montreal, the architecture was so detailed and incredible. I paid 6 dollars (cash-only) to enter the church and was completely in awe at how beautiful it was. There were gorgeous stained glass windows along both sides of the sanctuary but the intricate details and colours on the wall behind the pulpit were just breathtaking, with gorgeous carvings and statues. I spent some time just admiring the beauty of the church and taking photos. I recommend arriving early in the morning in order to enjoy this place with fewer people. The lines can get quite long in the afternoons and on weekends. You can also join a free guided tour of the church at certain times throughout the day included in the cost of admission (in French and English), and they have a light show in the evenings (separate cost). There are also washrooms in the basement of the church. This church is definitely a must-see in Montreal.
  • What an "INCREDIBLE" experience, I felt truly touch by this experience. This nearly two hundred year old Gothic Architecture church is quite beautiful. But the best was the "Aura" light show, truly mesmerizing. You will feel like you've been touch by the hand of GOD.
