Notre Dame Basilica, Montreal

(12,000+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site Landmark
See the jewel of Canada's religious heritage at Notre Dame Basilica, one of the world's most dramatic examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The majestic church boasts hundreds of intricately carved wooden statues in a grand interior that holds up to 4,000 worshippers--all under a blue ceiling speckled with gold stars. Instead of depicting religious scenes, the stained glass windows narrate the history of Montreal and offer a glimpse into the city's development over the centuries. The church regularly hosts musical events, with the main concert taking place at Christmas, when thousands attend the performance of Handel's "Messiah." • Despite the long line, it did not take long to get in. Since there is an entry charge, make sure you have Canadian money, since credit cards are not accepted. The church interior is beautiful.  more »

  • So majestic and beautiful. A religious experience to visit regardless of your denomination. The tour guides are all very knowledgeable and make the history come alive. Highly recommend the tour. Note that daily mass is not offered in the main cathedral. It is in the smaller one in the back for daily. Weekend is in the main basilica.
  • There was a guided tour which was very interesting but also short. The tour only involved sitting in the pews and listening to the guide and seeing some historical pictures. It would have been nice for the tour to have taken us around the Basilica with more details given about the individual alters and possibly go to the upper levels or to look inside the organ rooms. Note that they only accept CASH. There is also the opportunity to light a candle for a small fee. The building itself is very beautiful. So really the only downside of the visit is that we could not see more.
  • One of nicest Basilica in Montreal. It consists of perfectly made stain glass decorations. Check the pictures.
  • Awesome architecture everyone should surely check it out they have Expeditions in the basement separate entrance on the side
  • All time wonderful ⛪️
