Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal

#Church, #Landmark, #Must See
See the jewel of Canada's religious heritage at Notre-Dame Basilica, one of the world's most dramatic examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The majestic church boasts hundreds of intricately carved wooden statues in a grand interior that holds up to 4,000 worshippers--all under a blue ceiling speckled with gold stars. Instead of depicting religious scenes, the stained glass windows narrate the history of Montreal and offer a glimpse into the city's development over the centuries. The church regularly hosts musical events, with the main concert taking place at Christmas, when thousands attend the performance of Handel's "Messiah." • I've never been to the one in Paris but this one in Montreal is good enough. Many people were taking photos at its facade in the morning that we were there but the light may be better for photography ...  more »

  • In addition to very beautiful on the inside, it's different because both the ceiling as the altar are in blue. At the moment I came in had a choir singing qhe, which enriched the experience. V is certainly one of the obrigatorias visits in Montreal. And go also to night, as it has a beautiful lighting.

  • Beautiful, breath-taking Church located in old Montreal. Feels like you're in Europe. Old structured church with an additional modern room. Large space for religious gatherings but also offers daily tours with an admission fee (Recommended to check hours before visit). Once inside, you are able to explore at your own pace or join the tour group. A lot of history with plenty of large paintings and stain glass artwork. There is an upstairs area which is off limits and for staff only. Visitors are free to take photos inside, as long as there is no service.
  • Drop dead GORGEOUS basilica! The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is that it's very difficult to plan ahead for when you'll visit. I spent the afternoon in the courtyard across the street listening to street performers which was absolutely delightful. I admired the basilica from afar while watching about 5 weddings come and go in a few hours. It was beautiful to watch, but made it impossible to tour the inside. But once I finally made it in, it was worth it. They offer guided tours in many languages and I would suggest one to visitors - it's educational and enjoyable learning about the history of the basilica.
  • A must-see while in Montreal! Incredible design of the 19th century structure that has strong cultural and historical significance. $6 entry fee per person; do the free tour in either English or French as it’s very informative - you wouldn’t really get much out of the Basilica if you don’t do the tour. Private, silent, and beautiful prayer room in the back; don’t expect long lines unless maybe in peak summer. Water fountain and plenty of washrooms located downstairs.
  • This place is absolutely stunning. There is a small charge to go inside but it is absolutely worth it. The interior architecture is so intricate, there is a lot that I wanted to look at. Inside, there are free tours offered in a few different languages. It was so informative and interesting. I really enjoyed learning about the history of the building. There were a lot of tourists there but there is definitely enough space to find a quiet spot. This was the highlight of my trip to Montreal!
  • Whether you're religious or architecture lover, you cannot miss this touristic spot. We paid 5 Canadian dollars each to get into the main building and it's interior is breathtaking, with a few areas to explore. A highlight to the chapel at the back of the basilica. Its altar is something that I haven't seen before.
