Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal

Must see · Church · Landmark
See the jewel of Canada's religious heritage at Notre-Dame Basilica, one of the world's most dramatic examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The majestic church boasts hundreds of intricately carved wooden statues in a grand interior that holds up to 4,000 worshippers--all under a blue ceiling speckled with gold stars. Instead of depicting religious scenes, the stained glass windows narrate the history of Montreal and offer a glimpse into the city's development over the centuries. The church regularly hosts musical events, with the main concert taking place at Christmas, when thousands attend the performance of Handel's "Messiah." With our international travel planner, Montreal attractions like Notre-Dame Basilica can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Gorgeous church. 8$ entry fee for adults but worth it so much to see. Architecture is exquisite. Paintings and statues are amazing. Stained glasses windows are lovely. This church is a perfect place for someone who is a person of faith, or someone who loves amazing architectural design. You will not be disappointed.
  • Such a beautiful old church. The architecture is amazing. Its stained glass windows and beautiful wood carvings will leave you breathless. The frescoes are a wonder. The alter is so ornate and detailed. My wife and I visit everytime we are in Montreal to light candles for our loved ones who have passed on.
  • A must see in Montreal! It is a marvel with amazing woodwork. There is also a small chapel in the back that was restored after a fire. The bronze wall in the front of this chapel is amazing. There is also a light show at night(paid entrance) that is very good. This has to be one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world.
  • You get a sense of history and peacefulness as soon as you enter this place. The architecture is marvellous and is very well preserved. The entry fee is nominal and the queues can be huge on busy days. A great place for photographers as well. The inside and outside of the church are both picturesque.
  • A very nice cathedral. I love that unlike so many other churches these days, this place has managed to balance the masses of tourists without becoming a super crowded merchandise place. There are still separated rooms for prayers, and the ticket to enter the church also includes a free tour. The tour was very interesting and not too long, just condensed the most important and interesting facts about the history of Notre-Dame of Montreal. It is definitely worth going in, it looks a loot nicer inside than from the outside.
