Notre Dame Basilica, Montreal

4.5
See the jewel of Canada's religious heritage at Notre Dame Basilica, one of the world's most dramatic examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The majestic church boasts hundreds of intricately carved wooden statues in a grand interior that holds up to 4,000 worshippers--all under a blue ceiling speckled with gold stars. Instead of depicting religious scenes, the stained glass windows narrate the history of Montreal and offer a glimpse into the city's development over the centuries. The church regularly hosts musical events, with the main concert taking place at Christmas, when thousands attend the performance of Handel's "Messiah." • The Notre-Dame Basilica is a unique place in Montreal. She has seen many important celebrations in Montreal. The colors are very present and sculptures are worth visiting. A show sound and light of moment factory is a must.

  • I give this only a 4 out of 5 due it's beauty in and out. However it does not get a 5 because it costs $6 to go inside which literally will take you less than 10 minutes to look around. It is magnificent inside however but you also do not get to go up the towers.
  • So majestic and beautiful. A religious experience to visit regardless of your denomination. The tour guides are all very knowledgeable and make the history come alive. Highly recommend the tour. Note that daily mass is not offered in the main cathedral. It is in the smaller one in the back for daily. Weekend is in the main basilica.
  • There was a guided tour which was very interesting but also short. The tour only involved sitting in the pews and listening to the guide and seeing some historical pictures. It would have been nice for the tour to have taken us around the Basilica with more details given about the individual alters and possibly go to the upper levels or to look inside the organ rooms. Note that they only accept CASH. There is also the opportunity to light a candle for a small fee. The building itself is very beautiful. So really the only downside of the visit is that we could not see more.
  • Just beautiful. The stations of the cross brought tears to my eyes. The organist played amazing grace so magnificently. Beautiful blue lighting on the Exterior at night.
  • They have a light and sound show in the evenings (6 & 8 pm) and it's amazing !! You see the light effects on paintings around the church for about 15 min and then sit down for the rest of the show which is lights with symphonies and sound effects. Don't sit on the front or back raws, middle ones are great to see the show. It was great, you won't regret it. The only down side is that there is too many candles, hence smoke in the place and we all got a little headache but totally worth it.

Where to stay in Montreal

If beautiful architecture and views over the water appeal, stay in the historic neighborhood of Vieux Montreal (Old Montreal), where you'll be a stone's throw from the best attractions in the city. If modern convenience is more important to you, look for accommodations in the downtown neighborhood of Centre-Ville, or head a bit farther out to the artsy district of Plateau Mont-Royal. LGBTI visitors might want to consider staying in The Village, Montreal's famously progressive hub of gay and lesbian culture.
