Notre Dame Basilica, Montreal

4.6
See the jewel of Canada's religious heritage at Notre Dame Basilica, one of the world's most dramatic examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The majestic church boasts hundreds of intricately carved wooden statues in a grand interior that holds up to 4,000 worshippers--all under a blue ceiling speckled with gold stars. Instead of depicting religious scenes, the stained glass windows narrate the history of Montreal and offer a glimpse into the city's development over the centuries. The church regularly hosts musical events, with the main concert taking place at Christmas, when thousands attend the performance of Handel's "Messiah." • Beautiful, breath-taking Church located in old Montreal. Feels like you're in Europe. Old structured church with an additional modern room. Large space for religious gatherings but also offers daily tours with an admission fee (Recommended to check hours before visit). Once inside, you are able to explore at your own pace or join the tour group. A lot of history with plenty of large paintings and stain glass artwork. There is an upstairs area which is off limits and for staff only. Visitors are free to take photos inside, as long as there is no service.
  • This place is absolutely stunning. There is a small charge to go inside but it is absolutely worth it. The interior architecture is so intricate, there is a lot that I wanted to look at. Inside, there are free tours offered in a few different languages. It was so informative and interesting. I really enjoyed learning about the history of the building. There were a lot of tourists there but there is definitely enough space to find a quiet spot. This was the highlight of my trip to Montreal!
  • Impressive building, inside and outside. We had the opportunity to see the AURA show. It was very well done show the basilica pretty much transform into a laser and music show. They can fit @ 600 people inside so we didn’t buy tickets in advance. the ticket price was a little expensive but if you are in Montreal is definitely a must do.
  • Visited the Basilica back in 2008 and in 2012. There is a $5 charge to enter but it is well worth it. The Basilica is one of the finest examples of Gothic Architecture I've ever seen,The alter is no doubt the centre piece with its beautifully carved wood and a masterful mixture of light that left me in awe. It is a must see when visiting old Montreal, you won't regret it.
  • For me (along with the duty free shop at the border on the drive back to the U.S.), this was the highlight of our trip to Montreal. I'm not going to add to the many pictures already posted, but I will say this: if you're in the area, it's worth going to see it for yourself in person. The inside of this place is stunning. If you have any doubts, put them aside and just go. You won't regret it.

Where to stay in Montreal

If beautiful architecture and views over the water appeal, stay in the historic neighborhood of Vieux Montreal (Old Montreal), where you'll be a stone's throw from the best attractions in the city. If modern convenience is more important to you, look for accommodations in the downtown neighborhood of Centre-Ville, or head a bit farther out to the artsy district of Plateau Mont-Royal. LGBTI visitors might want to consider staying in The Village, Montreal's famously progressive hub of gay and lesbian culture.
