Appreciate an impressive work of engineering at Lieu Historique National du Canal-de-Lachine, an old canal now providing space for leisure and recreational activities. First used in 1821, the canal was designed to act as a gateway between the Atlantic and the heart of North America. Falling into obsolescence in the second half of the 20th century due to the opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, the canal was reopened in 2002 for pleasure boating, freeing up the areas either side for recreation and cultural activities. Learn about the history of the impressive creation at the onsite visitor center. • Leaving the Atwater market, this destination is very recommended! The edges of banks are very nice, whether for grass or the more energetic hikers (there is even a bike rental point). A nice way to take the air in the West-Island-of-Montreal.

  • The Lachine canal is a place not to be missed in Montreal. The ideal is to go by bike, by making a round trip of the old Montreal until the locks on the River, where there is the René-Lévesque Park, which is a peninsula in the River, a small islet of freshness with great views. The cycle track is asphalted and there is never to cross a street. It feels away from the traffic and pollution. We often have nice views of the city. Very busy the purpose of weeks, less busy week.
