Cabot Head Lighthouse, Miller Lake

4.3
#2 of 7 in Museums in Bruce County
Cabot Head is a point of land on the northeast tip of the Bruce Peninsula in the Canadian province of Ontario. The Bruce Peninsula separates Georgian Bay from the rest of Lake Huron. Cabot Head is so named in honor of the explorer John Cabot, although Cabot never explored the Great Lakes.Cabot Head LighthouseCabot Head Lighthouse sits 80 feet above the waterline of Georgian Bay. Originally built in 1896, the lighthouse is located on the eastern shore of Wingfield Basin Provincial Nature Reserve, marking a popular inlet for pleasure craft during harsh weather In 1968 the original tower and range light were demolished and replaced with an automated light. Over the next 15 years, The Friends of Cabot Head Lighthouse Organization restored the lighthouse. Today it serves as a museum, and tourists are encouraged to explore the paths throughout the surrounding Nature Reserve.

  • Beautiful tranquil quiet gem situated near Dyers Bay in Northern Bruce Peninsula. It was a gorgeous drive in, even on a Foggy day as we got to drive right beside Georgian Bay. The lighthouse nature reserve was closed for the season until May for tours, however we still got to guide ourselves around the area taking the beautiful trail to a water basin that Georgian Bay flows into as well as see two mountain bluffs. We then got to the end of the trails to the shore of Georgian Bay with just a short walk!
  • This is is certainly one of the most extensive collections of "Suggested donation - $20.00" collections I have ever seen! People keep talking about the lighthouse, which is entirely secondary to this magnificent collection. Want to climb the lighthouse? Don't worry, you won't miss any of the collection, there's a reminder on every floor! Need to use the outhouse? Don't worry, there's signs in there as well. 3/5 stars, because I think the signs could have been better used as part of a scavenger hunt, and I was disappointed you couldn't climb the operating light house, nor access the windows/outside of the restored light house. Also, there is a smattering of wilderness, and a few other odds and ends to see, but the real gem is the "donation reminder" collection (and of course the friendly staff who want to make sure you don't miss out on your opportunity to donate, I suggest $20.00!)
  • Very disappointing. The views are nice but it is not worth the drive to the lighthouse. The road is full of potholes and very poorly maintained. The old lighthouse itself is also poorly maintained. The group who takes care of its upkeep seems to have bitten off more than they can chew and there are constant reminder signs to make a " $20 donation". Seems they would just do better charging a $5 admission.
  • The drive to Cabot Head is scenic. I wish we were able to stop and take some pictures! The light house is cute - I couldn't take that many great pictures at the light house because of the glass. There's a small trail as well. Be careful of poison ivy and snakes. Also, your car will be dirty from the dirt on the ride there and back.
  • A beautiful light house. Worth visiting. Free admission but they ask for donations. Rattlesnake area though.
