Peyto Lake, Lake Louise

4.9
#3 of 48 in Parks in Banff National Park
The strikingly blue glacier-fed waters of Peyto Lake feature mesmerizing color caused by tiny particles of the rock the glacier brings forth when it "flows" in summer. From the lake, you can hike to Bow Summit--the highest point in the Canadian Rockies--and take in views from a viewing platform. If you have mobility issues, you can park closer to the viewing platform. Don't forget your camera. • This short hike is a MUST see. We found it by accident, and it didn't disappoint. The water looks like glows. Don't worry if you are not a hiker. The path is paved making it handicapped friendly. You ...  more »
  • Definitely worth a visit ! Short hike from the parking lot - 15 mins maybe ? Heard there is a wheelchair parking closer to the view point but have not looked for it - the pictures you see are totally ...  more »
  • Peyto Lake is spectacular! The colors are stunning and the views of the Canadian Rockies are breathtaking. It’s not much of a hike but more of a walk in the woods if you go from the viewing platform t...  more »

  • Love coming to Peyto lake! In the summer when it's torquoise, winter when it's frozen. It's beautiful. 10 minute hike from the parking lot. The sign is for "bow summit" when you are on the icefields parkway.
  • About half hour north of Banff town driving on the Ice field parkway, Entrance to the lake is a hidden driveway but can’t be missed. Ample parking spaces and a steep 15-20 Min hike to the viewing platform. Stunning& Gorgeous views of the lake and mountains behind. Wonderful spot for some awesome clicks so a camera is a must. This place does tend to get pretty crowded due to the small viewing platform and the numbers of tourist visiting this place. Does get chilly so bring a light sweater in case? Defiantly worth a stop and should not be missed, will definitely visit again.
  • One of the crown jewels of the Canadian Rockies. The stunning color of the water has to be seen to be believed. It's about a 10 min hike from the parking lot. Get down from the viewing area and hike a little down for the best people free views!!
  • The beauty of this lake is unreal. Even if you aren’t into hiking, take the short trek up to the viewing point from the parking lot. To access this view, drive to Bow Summit. It’s totally worth it and will not disappoint! I could stare at this beautiful view all day long.
  • Through the short trail FULL of mosquitoes eating you alive lies a beautiful , sky blue lake that lays in front of you as you get to the observation lake. Great place to take a picture BUT you can't really get to it too far and hence the disappointment because you can't really get a good photoshoot when the lake looks like the size of the model BUT for just looking at it and spending some time here it's okay. Fortunately there are many, many other lakes in this park so you won't have to worry that this is your only shot at a lake. Be careful because again, this place has tour bus parking lots so you will be left with a bunch of people. There are two ways to get here. The long way which we took heading south but if you keep driving a bit more you'll see another parking lot you can go to in order to reach the overlook faster!
