Peyto Lake, Lake Louise

4.8
#3 of 63 in Parks in Banff National Park
The strikingly blue glacier-fed waters of Peyto Lake feature mesmerizing color caused by tiny particles of the rock the glacier brings forth when it "flows" in summer. From the lake, you can hike to Bow Summit--the highest point in the Canadian Rockies--and take in views from a viewing platform. If you have mobility issues, you can park closer to the viewing platform. Don't forget your camera. • Oh wow! How to describe this lake? It is pronounced Pee-toe. We parked the car and after a short walk following a snowy pathway we suddenly turned a corner and there it was, the most amazing azure col...  more »
  • Personally we prefer Peyto lake to Louise. The colour is simply stunning. Its a slightly uphill walk from the car park to the lake. Again if you can go early like Louise then do. Before 7.30am is a sp...  more »
  • It is easy to access and walk to the main viewpoint which is on a wooden platform with guard rails. There is a better viewpoint further down, that is not on a platform and does not have guard rails.  more »

  • the famous lake was featured in a TV series as much as I can remember. well known to many, the exquisitely marvelous lake has its own distinctive, eye-catching turquoise color. the ever presence of the countless conifers had put a wonderful addition to the greatly awesome view, and with its much natural beauty, all the splendors would have given it a whole new meaning to heaven on earth
  • This is a beautiful place to visit if you are looking for a little less touristy experience. Pros: It's relatively easy to access. Less than 15 min walk from the parking lot, but it's uphill. It has a well constructed deck to enjoy the view. This is convenient if you are concerned with safety or with small children. The color of the lake is unbelievable blue, especially if it is not cloudy. Cons: You are pretty far from the lake. The lake is way down so don't expect to get close to the water. The deck can get a little crowded. It's not picnic friendly, don't plan to have lunch there while enjoying the view.
  • Stunning place. Incredible viewpoint. You cannot leave Banff without catching a glimpse of this lake 👌🏽
  • Absolutely amazing to see in person. There are TONS of tourists though and the parking lot fills up fast during peak seasons. Get there before the sun comes up or you will be walking for a few kms to get there.
  • One of the crown jewels of the Canadian Rockies. The stunning color of the water has to be seen to be believed. It's about a 10 min hike from the parking lot. Get down from the viewing area and hike a little down for the best people free views!!
