Peyto Lake, Lake Louise

4.8
#3 of 64 in Parks in Banff National Park
The strikingly blue glacier-fed waters of Peyto Lake feature mesmerizing color caused by tiny particles of the rock the glacier brings forth when it "flows" in summer. From the lake, you can hike to Bow Summit--the highest point in the Canadian Rockies--and take in views from a viewing platform. If you have mobility issues, you can park closer to the viewing platform. Don't forget your camera. • To go up to the lake area, you have to park and walk up the hill. There are sections of the hills that are fairly steep. You may want to allow time to climb up. But, it is well worth the strenuous cli...  more »
  • A short walk to view this most beautiful blue lake. Just stunning. Leave the platform and follow the path to explore the lake further and have a great view of the icefield that feeds this lake.  more »

  • Peyto Lake is just a short distance north of Bow Lake on the Icefields Parkway. The free parking lot was nearly deserted and we walked a short distance down a tall pine-lined trail to the overview to see this wonderful turquoise lake. Since low clouds were moving in, the colors were bright but without reflection. The mountains across the water are steep so this is a scenic place popular with tourists and travel publications. A great place to stop to breathe and slow down an over busy mind with some peace.
  • After you've driven north and stopped at Bow Summit to take in the awesome vista of Peyto Lake and dramatic surroundings, you can drive on a short distance and be at the lake's edge to further your aesthetic experience. I was there over Canada Day, and it actually wasn't wildly crowded at this iconic landmark. A photographer's paradise not to be missed. There is a lot of parking available.
  • Yes the water really is that blue even near sunset! We were here at 8:45 in June and the sun was just setting behind the mountains. There was no one in the parking lot so we drove up to the bus parking. We did the short walk to the overlook and were not disappointed. Such beautiful contrast between the lake and soaring mountains!
  • Completely blue! The color looks no real, you can feel the peace just looking at it. It’s a high point, you need to walk around 10minutes to the hill in order to discover an amazing lake. It’s a must when you are in Banff... there is usually crowded, but you can always find a spot !
  • The best lake in the Rockies! The photos you'll see are so true to real life. One of the most beautiful places in the world. Make sure you don't stop at the first photo point (which most people do). Take the small path up carry on climbing for another 10 minutes, you won't be disappointed!
