Norstead Viking Village, L'Anse aux Meadows

3.8
#9 of 33 in Historic Sites in Newfoundland
Step into daily Scandinavian life circa 790 CE to 1066 CE with a visit to Norstead Viking Village. This living history site depicts a Viking village or port of trade, complete with a boathouse, chieftain's hall, church, and blacksmith's shop. In the boathouse you'll find a 16 m (54 ft) replica Viking knarr, a merchant ship that sailed from Greenland to Newfoundland in 1998. Throughout the village you'll find enthusiastic and knowledgeable interpreters dressed in period costume who bring the site to life by showcasing how people lived. For example, you can watch demonstrations on knitting and cooking. The place you can visit quickly (1-2 hours). It may be interesting for children. We visited after attending the site national park Canada history across the road and if I recommend that one of the two, then Park Canada outweigh Norstead, which is more commercial and less "educational" (there are fewer educational panels; it receives just one card and not a brochure). It should be noted also that he is a "private" without government support initiative. The replenishment is interesting but not as beautiful as that of Park Canada. We can see a ship "Snorri" restored to repeat the trip in 1998 between Greenland and "Vineland", L'Anse aux Meadows so. For lovers of ships, Norstead so worth the drive. Actors who personify Nordic men and women are very warm, friendly and explained everything well. A local person told me they were volunteers. However, I did not at all appreciate hospitality of the receptionist who was on the phone, apparently conducting a private conversation, and has even not interrupted him to collect our tickets. For Canadian standards of politeness and hospitality we received around elsewhere, she could have done better. A site that is so worth the stop for boat enthusiasts and families who still have the energy after the visit of the "true" historical site... Otherwise, to choose between the two, prefer the site of Park Canada.
