  • This classic waterfront building just had a refresh to its look and is now an even better place to experience some of Kingston's rich history.  more »
  • The museum is not giant but it covers the subject of pumping water quite nicely. Loved the miniature train section, the "children activities area" (there is some Lego). Don't miss the dark room and th...  more »
  • Just looking at those heavy pumps and you question how in the 1800 could they get them from Toronto to Kingston. The toy train collection and the history about they got to the museum as a gift. Wow . ...  more »

  • Super-friendly, knowledgeable staff. We had a nice visit to the Pump House Steam Museum. It's not a huge museum so you could probably spend less than two hours there. We arrived at the end of the day so only had one hour. The model railroad section is great for younger children. Press a few buttons to watch the trains whiz around the tracks. It was interesting to learn about Kingston's bid to become the capital of Canada and the need for a steam-powered water pumping system. There are some interactive exhibits and we saw a Kingston Believe it or Not exhibit with fun facts about Kingston's early history. It was well worth the visit!
  • This is a great small museum in a beautiful location on the Kingston waterfront. It is a short walk downtown or to the Queen's University campus. It makes a great destination for children as the exhibits are lovely moving machines that capture the imagination.
  • Small museum, good view of the old city water pumps. Huge model train setup. For the Canadians of a certain age, the model train set that appeared on the opening of "The Friendly Giant" is on display. You can run many of the trains. The old steam launch outside is a nice treat as well.
  • Interesting museum with an addition of a few model trains.
  • I visited almost the first day it opened. There were more info on how pumping works. But those science info was probably too difficult and now it was replaced with science camp and other exhibits. But this museum is still full of fun for family with kids to spend couple hours. Don't forget about the fun train models!

Where to stay in Kingston

The most desirable accommodations in Kingston line the waterfront in the city's downtown region, offering views over the wide St. Lawrence River. If you want to immerse yourself in the city's hippest scene, look slightly west to the area around Queen's University, where you'll also enjoy easy access to some of Kingston's most pleasant parks. Those hoping to take some road trips out of the city should consider staying at one of the many motels and guesthouses along Princess Street--there, you're perfectly placed to hit the road and explore the region.
