Athabasca Glacier, Jasper National Park

4.5
#5 of 19 in Nature in Jasper National Park
Take a walk on Athabasca Glacier, and see the otherworldly look of the rocky moraines left by the slowly shrinking ice. One of six main "toes" stemming from the Columbia Icefield, the glacier remains in constant motion, moving forward a few centimeters each day. Be careful when walking on the ice: hidden cracks and crevices are extremely dangerous, so be sure to stay within the barriers. Make Athabasca Glacier a centerpiece of your Jasper National Park vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Jasper National Park day trip app .

  • See it now while you still have a chance! The glacier has a stark beauty and an interesting natural history.
  • We visited in September and hit a cold spell - definitely plan for the weather. The nice part was that we had it mostly to ourselves The glacier is impressive and accessible like few other glaciers are.
  • Had a wonderful time walking on the glacier, though it was a bit cold. It is slippery, wear good shoes. Bring a container and collect glacier water. The scary part is seeing how much the glacier has receded over the years. While awaiting our turn on the bus to the glacier, we walked across the park to the foot of the glacier. It was also another unforgettable experience. You are not allowed to get on to the glacier from here.
  • Stunning and recommend to visit, see it while you can. Charming ice glacier, impressive experience here.
  • My parents and I went there back in 1970, with my uncle and aunt, and it was so beautiful to see, but it has receded further back from when I saw it. I even had the chance to pet Bighorn sheep, that came right up to me, I never fed them either. You never feed wild life
