Othello Tunnels, Hope

#1 of 19 in Things to do in Hope
Wander through the province's deep gorges and dense forest at Othello Tunnels, a series of former railway routes spanning the Coquihalla River. Built during the early 20th century to connect the region with the coast by train, the park features an array of walkways, bridges, and paths cutting straight through sheer rock cliffs, some of which rise to heights of 91 m (300 ft). Wander the easy 3.5 km (2.2 mi) loop through five different tunnels and you'll find up close views of the rushing river, as well as the area's lush nature. Alternatively, you can cycle the path or fish in the river with the required license. Othello Tunnels is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Hope Edition.

  • The tunnels are awesome to see. Totally recommend it. It is an easy 700m walk to them. If you are adventurous, you can do the longer loop. It is hilly and 5.3k all around. Parking was a bit tight. How...  more »

  • Seriously a must visit type of place. The old man-made trestles and tunnels has gradually and beautifully merged with the raw, natural beauty of the surrounding area. The walk is very much accessible to everyone (even bikes). There are also some trails that you can take that leads to the rushing river below. A perfect place to go to with your friends and families. Oh and awesome for photoshoots 🙏.
  • Really interesting stop. Interpretive signs were very informative about the building and history of the kettle valley railroad. The caves are situated amongst the natural beauty of the river and mountains. Would recommend visiting. There is also the option to do longer hikes in the area- we did not opt to do the longer trail as the temperature was too hot.
  • This worth your time! There are some amazing and beautiful views here. The walk up doesn’t take long and you’ll be happy you visited. It’s an amazing little place and it’s nice a cool and a welcome refresher from the heat. I’ve added a lot of pics so you can get an idea of how pretty it is
  • It was lose to the highway, easily walkable and fairly impressive to see. I found it remarkable that they did the blasting from wooden ladders. The tunnels were built from 1918 to 1951 but the main train route changed after that leaving this cool artifact. Pro tip: there are lots of good hiding places where one can jump out to scare friends and family.
  • We had a great time here. We went at 4pm during the summer. In peak seasons it's better to go in the afternoon because in the morning there are buses full of people. There are only a few tunnels and I suggest you bring a flashlight if you have little kids. There are extra trails to explore too so you could be there a long time if you wanted to.
