Halifax Central Library, Halifax

4.8
Step into Halifax Central Library, where the building draws as much attention as the books. Halifax's largest public library features a dramatic fifth-floor cantilever over the entrance plaza. Inside, take the crisscrossed staircases to access the large collection of books. Take a break from reading and buy a refreshment on the rooftop terrace cafe, one of two cafes on site. Kids can also enjoy the play area or one of the many games available. Check ahead for any events that may be on during your visit. • Very modern and has a good collection of books. Downside is that it's more of a recreational center , with an atrium. It is SO LOUD. Can't get any reading done peacefully. Even the quiet sections has so much traffic because people seem to be constantly on tours or something. Barely anyone has respect for it being a library and speak loudly throughout. You literally need to be locked in a room by yourself or sit on the roof if you want quiet.
  • This place is great to hang out, read, or do a little work. I personally find it a little body, and there isn't quite enough work space, but you can always find something. The discs is dynamic and has some good views. The staff are helpful.
  • The new library is very light and airy, and very pleasant experience. Checking it out on a Sunday afternoon to do some school work while waiting for someone downtown. On the one hand it is great to see it so popular, but within 1/2 hour of opening it is hard to find a quiet area seat.
  • Stunning building with tons of places to read and work. Great selection of magazines and reliable internet. They also host tons of free events. Kids area is basically one whole floor and includes a Lego table, Xbox stations and play area. The coffee shop is great too. The only downside is too many smelly vagrants who are using the building as a homeless shelter.
  • Came to find a quiet space in which I could finish up a major 4000 word extended essay. Turns out there was a very loud Christmas concert happening. No big deal, who studies at the library these days anyway?
