#1 of 19 in Winter Sports in Kootenay Rockies
From skiing to mountain biking, horse riding to alpine sightseeing, there's something for everyone at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Enjoy panoramic mountain views and ever-changing flora as you explore the area. A gondola takes you up to the grand mountains as high as 1,260 m (4,100 ft), where you have access to slopes comparable to those used for heli-skiing. As a result, the terrain is better suited for advanced skiers, as the slopes can be quite steep. • We were 3-couple who traveled to Canada on skiing holiday. We chose to go to Kicking Horse. The plant's structure, and great trails, as well as opportunities for offpist driving in safe terrain. For that we shouldn't have to spend time and run the return trip the Golden every day we decided and stay at the ski-resort. We rented a suite with 2 bedrooms, 1, bathroom and kitchen. This was our "basecamp" in addition to a double room. Quite Ok standard, we had everything we needed. Dishwasher, micro, coffee maker, water boiler, stove and kitchen equipment. In the bathroom there was a bath, washing machine and tumble dryer. After a long day on the slopes we ski customer just place in a locked storage cabinet in a room with shoe dryer,-perfect with direct access to the ground. 100 m to the gondola. This was free. Afterwards, take a bath in the Jacuzzi that was outdoors! Make dinner with friends in "Basecamp" and end the day on the couch in front of the gas fireplace.

  • The snow is excellent when conditions are just right, lots of good terrain for intermediate/advanced ski/boarders. If conditions were equal I’d personally head somewhere smaller and with less hype to ...  more »
  • This is one awesome ski hill. The snow is terrific, the bowls are north facing and preserve the snow, especially up top. The Gondola protects the skiers from the elements and allows for 4,000 vertical...  more »

  • Unbelievably amazing hill, great for snowboarding or skiing if you are advanced as there are few novice runs. Not over-groomed, tons of snow, this mountain is the perfect mix of open / tree runs. All definitely be visiting again at the first opportunity! The town of Golden has great food and the nearby chalets are very reasonably priced for the luxury you get.
  • Stayed at Glacier Lodge which was at the base of the Gondola. It was a standard suite that you'd expect at any resort. The hot tub was waaaay too small though. You could fit 8-10 people at best. Aside from that, Peaks Grill was awesome. Good food, great service. Line ups for the Gondola were a bit ridiculous but there was an event on the mountain that day. The snow and terrain were fantastic. I'd definitely return.
  • AMAZING skiers mountain! Impressive, intimidating at times, and yes , you will be challenged regardless of your level. And the landscape is UNBELIEVABLE. The bad side, no general store, supermarket or liquor store in the village and the nearest ones are 14 km away(Golden). Transport to Golden isn’t really available so if you are not driving, hitch hiking is a good option. The environment is super friendly and there are good options for kids and learners. And yes, the snow is fantastic and I would indeed come back and recommend it to my friends and family!
  • Small resort: just 1 gondola + 1 chairlift if you take out the beginner / easier area at the foot of the mountain. But surprising amount of terrain and off piste access from the two summits. Definitely a more advanced mountain with generally a high skill level. The first time the World Freeriding competition came to north America it came here, so plenty of steep rides and big air for very advanced snow goers.
  • Decent resort, good runs. My only complaint is that they have a very poor selection for beginners. The only run to learn on besides a mediocre bunny hill is as steep as a blue run. My boyfriend paid for a lesson which was suppose to be private, since he skied a few times already. Last minute they threw in a couple in who was skiing for their first time. I noticed my boyfriend spent a lot of time waiting for the instructor and the other couple to catch up. He was on his own most of the time on the bunny hill. Into the last hour I was snowboarding down the bigger hill and saw my boyfriend had taken his skies off and was sitting half way down the hill. I asked him where the group was and he said he had been waiting for 20 minutes, and the guy in the lesson was not experienced enough to go down the hill so it was taking forever for them to catch up. My boyfriend was told to just wait for them. We waited another 25 minutes and his group didn’t come down but other instructors who passed us said they were still coming down, just slow and talking a lot. Eventually his lesson was out of time and we decided to just go down on our own and let the ski school know we waited and they never caught up. It was frustrating that half our money was spent sitting waiting for a dumbass pansy to get his ass down the hill, but whatever. The instructor was nice, I don’t think it was his fault. They just need to coordinate experience groups better. It’s not fair to charge customers then not teach them.
