#1 of 9 in Museums in Kawartha Lakes
At Horseless Carriage Museum, you'll find a private collection of pre-1914 transportation and mechanical technology. The museum exhibits a 19th-century steam traction engine (Canada's oldest), rare music machines, and several vehicles over a century old. The general store, a true blast from the past, sells local maple syrup, honey, preserves, quilts, and other handmade crafts--all ideal gift or souvenir ideas even for those not into mechanical things and old cars. • We stopped in on a whim, and were lucky enough to join in a tour with another couple that had called ahead. Fabulous tour, we had a great time! Mr. Bennett has such a passion for historic mechanical treasures and his tour was very informative. Be sure to bring some cash, as his wife makes and sells hand cranked socks and other nifty crafts. Thank you for the awesome afternoon!
  • Really a hidden gem. If you like steam powered cars and early music players this is a great place. Owner is a treasure of great stories and he will play the machines for you
  • When you pull up the drive you might think to yourself "how long could I spend in this barn?" But you'll be surprised! The antique and vintage equipment and period pieces are impressive the way they've been immaculately restored, and most are in working condition, but what really sets this place apart from other attractions is the passion and generosity of the owner, Mr. Bennett. His contagious energy and enthusiasm will draw you in as he explains the restoration process and historic significance of each piece in his collection. Gearheads, historians or anyone with a curious mind will love absorbing the rich stories that this place has to offer. They also sell candies and preserves, so be sure to bring cash!
  • Extremely informative and interesting. Mr. Bennett was just closing up when we came by because we had heard about the private museum from a relative, local to the area. He graciously gave us the tour and I am so happy we were able to see his collection and benefit from his vast knowledge! So many unique cars and machines and collectibles! This museum needs more exposure in "Things to Do and See in the Kawarthas".
  • Loved it! Great job tour, great history!
