Helmcken Falls, Clearwater

4.8
#1 of 6 in Parks in Clearwater
See an impressive natural landmark at Helmcken Falls, the fourth-highest falls in the country. Surrounded by the lush vegetation of a provincial park, the cascade drops over the western escarpment of the Murtle Plateau and crashes into a rough canyon. A viewing platform offers a good perspective on the falls, with the water, canyon, and surrounding trees forming a memorable (and very photogenic) scene. A range of trails through the countryside begin at the falls, of varying lengths and difficulties. • A bit far into the Wells Gray Provincial Park located at CLearwater, the most beautiful waterfall, we saw on our tour in Western of Canada can be found with the Helmcken falls. Deep water in a mighty Gorge falls, middle of May was still abundant ice to see and revealed that this waterfall is spectacular in all seasons. You get a few worth reading information on panels. Absolutely worth seeing.

  • Beautiful waterfall that you can easily accessible from parking. You can take the short walk to to view from different angles:

  • Between Sunpeaks and Jasper in Wells Gray Prov Park is another awesome waterfall. A short walk from the car park, to stretch the legs after a long drive. A must to see.  more »

  • Unreal. The walk-in hike was way shorter than we were expecting & so exciting to approach from along the river before it drops. Beautiful forest as well.
  • Although a long drive from clearwater...well worth the effort. Give yourself a few hours to do at least 3 of the waterfalls...'little Niagra' being one of the best. Saw it at sunset...amazing
  • Beautiful place and hike, really quiet we had an awesome time exploring around.
  • Falls beautiful. Bring mosquito spray!!! You won't spend long here as it's just the lookout up top (didn't see any trails etc). There are a couple of other falls & lookouts on the road in/out too which are good. Saw a couple of accommodation places & eatery/pub on the road in also. Saw a big bear on the side of the road on the way in!
  • Follow Clearwater valley road and then helmcken falls road all the way in. It takes pretty long, around 30min at least (one way). The road has a lot of potholes and can be quite narrow, have to drive slowly and carefully. Fall is quite mesmerising, incredible to see how water has carved the landscape!

Where to stay in Clearwater

Camping grounds and RV parks make up the majority of options in the small town, with the most scenic of these located slightly west of the center, on the shores of Dutch Lake. Don't expect much in the way of amenities at these sites--if you're looking for something more luxurious, reserve in advance to secure a room in one of the town's few bed and breakfasts.
