Meat Cove, Cape Breton Island
(3.8/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
Experience a slowed-down slice of Nova Scotia life at Meat Cove, a rural fishing community on the northernmost tip of Cape Breton Island. The unusual name for this village likely refers to the hunters who dressed in animal carcasses in the area's early history. Take the drive along the St. Lawrence Bay for memorable views along the remote coast (do prepare for some tough driving conditions). Park and snap a few pictures, or hike along the rugged landscape for a bit. With fishing and tourism as the main sources of income for the community, you can be sure to find excellent seafood dishes among the restaurants here. Try the fish and chips. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Sydney holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Meat Cove and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • We drove north of Cabot Trail on to Meat Cove on a gravel road. Hoped to see moose but only saw what they left behind! Beautiful view from northernmost tip of Nova Scotia.
  • We'd heard that the six-mile road to Meat Cove was sketchy, but it was in good repair and didn't present problems for our Class B van. The road is mostly gravel, but seemed to have been recently paved...  more »
  • Weren't sure about taking the extra time to go to Meat Cove, some said it was worth it others said don't bother. We took the extra time to drive to the tip on a curvy road. When we came out at Meat Co...  more »
