  • Built in 1988 for the Winter Olympics. Was the meeting place of the medals and the space is used for various ceremonies, festivals and events. Notice the floor bricks. These are the so-called Olympic bricks. Were sold to the public for $19.88 each. For each brick sold, $5 were donated to the Olympic Plaza Trust Fund. Personal messages, entries and phrases were recorded in bricks. In April 1987 the workers began to set them. Centennial Grove installation, features 100 Orange tubes of various heights, which suggest 100 logs in native prairies. Were placed to celebrate the 100 years of Calgary parks. In each one of them is written the name of a city park and the larger trees represent the oldest parks. Are 100, each one for a Calgary! The trees are placed in groups of 10 to represent the passage of time and the growth of the city between 1910 and 2010. In winter the Lake becomes an outdoor skating rink. Exceptionally, this Plaza has public toilet. To get there, get off at the station of the C-Train called City Hall.

  • If not your way, don't waste time. Is a square for the Olympic Winter Games held in the city in 1988. No big deal ...

  • Olympic Plaza has much historical background, but it's also a great starting spot for a walking tour. To the East is City Hall, with outdoor sculptures and acess to the seat of Municipal Gov't. The po...  more »

  • Went to the "Arabic" festival to check it out. The fountain had water in it, music was playing on the stage, but couldn't enjoy the show because it was too far to appreciate. Turn the fountain off, drain the water, and let the people (not high or drunk) dance and enjoy the festivities! Oh, and more vendors! 4 vendors isn't sufficient for attractions. You need more to draw in more people!
  • Olympic plaza is very beautiful. Come here in the winter to skate on high quality ice. Even if the weather is just above zero. Come here in the summer to splash in the water or see a free festival. The park can be very empty with little life at times though. Better programing and major site layout changes need to be cosidered so that life and activity in the plaza increases and larger events like xfest can be hosted here.
  • Love the splash park, always neat entertainment. HATE the fact that there are homeless people sleeping EVERYWHERE down there. My little daughter needs to be changed into a swim diaper and I refuse to do it without someone holding up her towel around the stroller as there's nowhere accessible to do it. And waaay too many drunk/belligerent/weird men. Hate getting mooched off for money, hate when they want to have drunk conversations with me. Beautiful area, ruined by a lack of any sense of security.
  • An excellent public square across from city hall. Yes there might be some "homeless people" around, but everyone generally keeps to themselves. (A simple "Sorry, no" to a "spare change?" request usually suffices)
  • My favourite public spot in town. Pretty cool year round - ice-skating on winter time or just sitting and relaxing on summer, maybe some music going on... Definitely a must see block in Calgary, close to City Hall, Teatro and Epcor Centre at the door to Stephen Ave.
