Tunnel Mountain Trail, Banff

4.7
#1 of 19 in Trails in Banff National Park
Hike Tunnel Mountain Trail for a rewarding view of the Canadian Rockies. At a length of 2.3 km (1.4 mi), the sloping trail remains mostly gentle but requires a moderate fitness level for uphill trekking. Once at the top, you'll find a compelling 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains, river valleys, towns, and a golf course. Be sure to check the conditions of the trail before going and take shoes with good traction, as the rocks can get slippery. Interesting info. But waited 45 minutes without seeing a train. One of the marvels of the Railway history in Canada. Worth a stop. Free parking. No cost.  more »

Took us about 75 minutes to gently walk to the top. Great views. We went early and avoided the crowds. Saw people of all abilities and small children make the walk  more »

This quick hike rewards adventurers with spectacular views across the valley, both East and West. We took our 3- and 5-year-old up and back in an hour and a half. The older one walked the whole way. Be sure to wear secure shoes because the trail is rocky and gravelly in some spots. It's 1.8 km to summit from the upper parking area along Tunnel Mountain Drive, add 450m to lower parking lot.

Easy, short trail suitable for families. In mid June, the trail is completely defrosted and is entirely dirt or gravel. No restrooms or water facilities, so plan accordingly, but the hike is quick enough that being unprepared is usually fine.

Easy trail hike that offers great views of banff and surrounding area. Bring good hiking shoes as it is a forested path that gets muddy quickly, and can be icy up top. We rented crampons but they really weren't necessary except for the last 50 feet or so. Could easily be worse earlier in the season though.

We had a perfect weather for hiking even around 5pm. Early July with cool wind at the top. Lots of incline though. :)

Great view of Banff! Not too difficult a hike and the walkway is clearly marked and not that steep. Highly recommend views of both sides at the top
