Sulphur Mountain, Banff National Park

Head up Sulphur Mountain for extensive views of six mountain ranges in the Canadian Rockies. Named for the hot springs on its lower slopes, the mountain features both hiking trails and a scenic eight-minute gondola ride to its peak. At the summit, you'll find a 1903 meteorological observatory that still contains antique furnishings. The area at the top also includes a short historical walk and well-maintained observation decks where you can admire the scenery and snap photos. • Our Group took Gondola Ride to top of Sulphur Mountain then spent time taking photos from the many viewing decks that are built into this impressive Mountain Spectacular views which ever way we turned...  more »
  • Take the cables car up the hill (about 8 minutes), to see the Mountain view of the mountain, snow, rivers, trees knit scenery is really beautiful ~ but the mountain wind is very big, want to wear a little more. At the top of the mountain, the Hoteis Road goes forward, enjoying the beautiful scenery, reaching a high point for about 20 minutes, overlooking the whole of Banff.

  • Really cool. Didn't get a chance to go up the gondolas but it seems amazing! Also you can easily walk to the hot spring on the mountain.
  • Trail distance: 5.5 km Time to hike: 1.5 - 2 hrs Height: 670 m A wonderful and beautiful hike for intermediate hikers. It's a switchback trail with approximately 670m of elevation from the Banff valley. In the winter, the path is gently trodden and I recommend packing lightly with trekking poles as the edge of the path is precariously close to a dramatic slope. The view of the adjoining mountains and city below are breathtaking. Once at the top, you can take the gondola down for free - instead of paying $50+ CAD (round trip) or $31 (one-way) - between October 9 and May 19. If you'd like to hike down but take the gondola up you are required to purchase a full price ticket. Highly recommend this hike.
  • The hike up the switchbacks is quite steep but worth the great views of Banff! Don’t be a baby and take the gondola, earn it! Also the gondola is free to come back after 7pm I believe.
  • This is truly a gem and must-do in Banff (and I’m surprise is not part of the top 10 attractions) For us - a family of 3 - the gondola, the amazing all-you-can-eat restaurant, the hikes, nature and astonishing views were the highlights of our trip to Banff, perhaps to the entire trip - EXCELLENT!
  • In these pictures in the white jersey, was my very 1st time up here and I was in for a shock of a life time!! These mountains have a special attraction, and leave you speechless.
