  • Fort Malden is a great historic experience when visiting the Amherstburg area as a family, or while traveling and visiting Canada in the Essex County area. The knowledgeable staff take history of Canadian frontiers and explain the history of this defensive post where British troops once stationed along the Great Lakes. The landscape is unique, deep rolling green gullies surround some of the fort, restored barracks for troops, children can wear costumes and fire imaginary wooden rifles. There is a kitchen serving bread and porridge by staff that wear Era-authentic clothing. It's a relaxing day out for a family, place to have a picnic with views of Detroit River, Boblo Island, there's some pensioners cottages and a few games of age old, like tossing bean sacks. Stroll the waterfront and afterwards have dinner or drinks in one of the cozy pubs and restaurants downtown Amherstburg. See my photos in the gift shop, as former volunteers for Parks Canada, our experiences were documented in the 2017 Park Pass campaign. Lots of fun, enjoy!
  • Reenactment of war 1812/1837..with narration. Great for children learning history. Attended on a day that had various activities related to historical lifestyle and army. Children could dress up as soldiers and pretend to be soldiers with grown-up soldier actors. Children appeared to be having a lot of fun. Definitely recommend on dates that these activities are running
  • a history buffs eden. Great for kids too. in season reinactors on site. A national historic site.
  • Beautiful historic site on the shores of the Detroit River in historic Amherstburg, Ontario. Fascinating War of 1812 history, among other things. Attractive historic buildings and landscaping. Nice views of the river. Beautiful town surrounding the fort--a very pedestrian friendly area.
  • This is a small fort that was barely saved from disappearing by Canada finally acquiring the remaining land and buildings. The staff in the museum, visitor center and barracks were very friendly and welcomed questions. It's a nice place to stroll through the grounds and get a brief glimpse of 1800s Canadian history. Local high school and college students serve as the "soldiers." It's not very large, so it can make a nice stop along the way as you're traveling some place and just need to take a break for a while. Because it sits on the Detroit River, you also can take a walk along the water or just sit and watch boats float by.
