Kbal Chhay Waterfall, Sihanoukville

3.4
#2 of 7 in Parks in Sihanoukville
A former hideout of the notorious Khmer Rouge, Kbal Chhay Waterfall today serves as a popular tourist destination and a clear water reservoir for the nearby town. The water gathers from several sources and cascades 14 m (46 ft) over multiple tiers. Take a dip in the refreshingly cool pool and the bottom of the waterfall, or buy some snacks from the local food stalls and find the perfect place for a picnic. The lush green area around the falls serves as a popular picnicking spot, but can also get quite messy with rubbish left behind by visitors. • Our poor tuk tuk climbing the hills and attempting to cross the dirt roads was an adventure in itself. The views of the coast line now, it’s not going to look like this for long The waterfall was nice...  more »
  • Bit of a hike on a poor road to get there. It is at the convergence of a couple of rivers one was a bit muddy would not have swum in the other looked okay. Unless you are going to hire one of the 100s...  more »
  • The road to the waterfall horrible, on a moped is not really go there, all in the dust, construction goes, many trucks travel, the waterfall itself not as litter everywhere as always, bought at the very bottom of the failed, met a tourist with split leg apparently came to the same trash ( made a couple of snaps for checkboxes and piled up, if you do then you can muster has nothing at all to for local diversity.

  • Interesting mix of enjoying nature amidst jerry built brick and concrete walkways, rest areas and retaining walls. Nevertheless it is a good place to cool off on a hot day.
  • nice place to visit, some shops where you can buy some souveniers, or eat. Not too much plastic around. Prices are a little bit higher then usual but not absolutely overpriced. The road to the waterfall is quite scenic, easy to ride in the dry season.
  • Waterfalls are nice. But place is way overcrowded and to focused on ripping off tourists. They have put checkpoint on the road that charges a buck per tourist... free for locals. Then bunch of ladies force selling junk. Prices are inflated on everything. Not comming back...
  • It used to be cleaner years ago, a very peaceful place to have picnic with the family during weekends. Nature at its' best, as far as i can recall! Beautiful butterflies roam the grounds, not minding the people walking by. Those were the days that i was able to capture my best butterfly photos cause they didn't mind the click of my camera or if i get too close to take a shot. Now is a different scenario. No more butterflies on site. It has become more commercialized with a lot of kiosks and hawkers selling streetfoods to incoming local and foreign tourists. Young children going around selling flower crowns to girls and women. Hanging weaved chairs with decorative flowers were placed in different areas near the falls. You can sit and have your photo taken but with a fee for using the chair. Local photographers roam the area too. More wooden cottages with hammocks were built all around the place esp. near the waterfalls area and each one is for rent. If you get lucky and you order food from its' caretaker, the rent for the cottage is waived. It was all about earning a little bucks in this once beautiful place. I just hope that the management exert an effort to preserve the place by imposing strict sanitation guidelines for the people to follow. Litters can be seen everywhere. People dispose their trash anywhere. Putting up garbage bins in strategic place would help a lot. Kbal Chhay waterfalls is one of the popular attractions in SHV so keeping it presentable and clean for tourists would be ideal.
  • The nature is calm and iconic fresh water location of the province
