War Museum Cambodia, Siem Reap

(3.8/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Hold small arms and feel the difference between the M16 and the AK47 at War Museum Cambodia, which displays a lethal mix of US, Soviet, and Chinese military hardware and claims to be the only war museum in Cambodia. A wide range of artillery pieces, Soviet T54 tanks, a Mig-19 jet, Mil Mi6 helicopters, and 85-mm divisional gun D-44, and even Chinese Shenyang F-6 fighter jets have been collected since 1999. A huge collection of land mines and wartime photographs tell stories of the armed conflict in Cambodia, which raged for the last three decades of the 20th century. Located between Siem Reap and the airport, the museum offers some hands-on insights into recent conflicts in the country, explained by four free guides, two of whom are war veterans who used to fight on opposing sides. • My wife and I had some free time on our first morning in Siem Reap and decided to visit the War Museum. We are very glad we did. The museum has a lot of different tanks and weapons, but what really ma...  more »
  • Worth a visit of the Museum only thanks to the reports of the tour guides, who can report all first-hand about the eventful past of the country. A couple of minutes to invest by first reading through the chapter on the Khmer Rouge in the guide is highly recommended. Who wants to look at only the old munitions without to care for its usage and the story around is probably disappointed. Of course, the weapons are rusted, because the last acts of war are fortunately almost 20 years. Who wants to make a photo of himself with a machine gun in his hand, should be aware also, that with each of these devices, dozens of people were killed. Part of 10-year-old child soldiers.

  • A good way to learn the recent Cambodian history. It is so sad to learn how many people have died and how many mines were still left in the country. It was also sad to learn the US involvement in the ...  more »
