Kbal Spean, Siem Reap

(4/5 based on 750+ reviews on the web)
Carved into a terraced sandstone riverbed deep in the jungle, Kbal Spean features elaborate scenes from the Sanskrit epic Ramayana. Follow a 2 km (1.2 mi) uphill walk to the site, pausing to see a balancing rock and waterfalls en route. Once there, admire the exquisite carving of Vishnu cut into the bank, as well as intricate floral motives washed by the clear water cutting through the rock. Search for the pink sandstone's countless lingas, rendered in the 10th and 11th centuries to bless the waters, and look for board game-like carvings on the very bed. Wash your hands here for good luck. Hire a guide to explain the Hindu tradition to you, and bring plenty of water. • I was disappointed with this site. The effort to get to this site was not worth it in my opinion. If you are looking for a good hike away from the noise of the city then this is a good option. If you ...  more »
  • Our guide told us we'd be hiking. No problem. We're in good shape and after visiting temples around the area, we welcomed the idea of getting a little exercise. Hiking is good, but hiking in heat is a...  more »
  • Since the path is sometimes quite steep here less tourists can be found and the few have unfortunately brought their habits from their country. Plastic bottles are simply thrown away and to pick up this bottle on the prompt, to take and to throw in one of the available garbage bucket you get only a jittering yes yes. Environmental awareness is more European. The riverbed and waterfall are worth in the rainy season and at the beginning of the dry season the most beautiful and the effort. On Sunday, Cambodian families meet to picnic on the river and we were constantly asked to eat with. Cambodians are really very open and generous people, although they are even quite poor.
