Eastern Mebon, Siem Reap

4.3
One of the best-preserved temples in the Angkor city and part of a World Heritage Site, Eastern Mebon attracts visitors with its well-preserved elephant statues and five cone-shaped pillars. Climb the four stairways guarded by the picturesque elephants and admire the stone carvings of verses from Hindu mythology and historical scripts. While the whole complex honors Shiva and the parents of the king Rajendravarman II, the small altars inside the pillars are dedicated to other Hindu deities. Along with the exquisite examples of architecture, the temple stands out for its use of red brick made from iron-rich clay. • This is a lesser-known Temple, yet I found it absolutely worth seeing. As a result it has known less fewer visitors, which is another plus. For people who are bad walking, or fear of heights have conditioned only recommended.

  • Interesting place but if you already visited Angkor wat and Angkor thom , You might not felt so excited with Eastern Mebon , good for exercise to climbing up.  more »
  • Sees quickie, but fun because it's not very big and is not very crowded. It is on the long route (which is worth doing, 100%) and retains some elephant carvings in the 4 corners and a Lion at the gate, Temple, 9th century, older than Angkor.

  • East Mebon may not be as grand as Bayon or Angkor Wat but it is none the less a great temple to visit in Angkor. It is a partially restored temple mountain, you can climb to the top tier and enjoy the view and contemplate. It is very peaceful as there is little crowd. Look out for the elephant sculptures at the four corners of the lower two tiers. Definitely worth visiting if you have the time.
  • Beautiful temple, but not much to see there. Less crowded so can spend sometime pondering if you like that. Not a temple to go for if you want to have less time on your trip, but go there if you have time and want some peaceful less crowded place. Late afternoon/evening recommended when the sun is in the West and coats the temple golden.
  • Cool temple. Not the coolest, but worth it if you bought a 3 or 7 day pass.
  • One of the early Angkor temples. If you'd like to experience the full magnificence of Angkor, don't only stick to the most known temples, but visit many in a chronological order, so you can feel the history and rising power of an empire!
  • One of my favorite temples! Worth the stop during your visit to Angkor Archaeological Park.
