Angkor National Museum, Siem Reap

4.1
Inspect the cultural heritage of the Khmer Empire's golden era at Angkor National Museum. Opened in 2007, the museum houses a vast collection of relics that portray the ancient civilization's legends and art. The exterior may look a bit mall-like, but the museum's many galleries brim with splendor sure to impress hard-core history buffs. Inside the exhibit halls, you can examine informative displays about Angkor Wat, the rise of the Khmer Empire, and the influence of Buddhism on the local people. The museum prohibits photography and offers discounted tickets for the youngest visitors. • Unlike other reviewers, I used a couple of hours of the last day of the tour to visit this museum. The facility is beautiful, modern, bright and well organized; very dear, I add ($12 ticket). The collection, after visiting the Angkor temples and the Museum of Phnom Penh I elicited no emotion; I didn't find particularly significant or beautiful artefacts. Moreover, many exhibits don't even have the charm of the origin (origin: unknown is labelled widespread). Probably a better command of English would have facilitated in the times of reading captions (numerous and well made), allowing me to appreciate more of your visit. Audio guides are available in several languages (I remember German, Spanish, French and English, of course, in addition to some Asian languages; also in Cambodia Italians were snubbed).

  • I’m so glad I decided to go here before any temple visits. The museum is really educational and has hundreds of fascinating items. It’s air conditioned and there is absolutely no sense of being rushed...  more »
  • came here on our first day so glad we did, gave us a base of information before heading out to temples. Beautiful museum worth the visit. Also loved the museum shop and cafe for a cold drink.  more »

  • Very pricey (nothing compared to the temple itself!), but once you're here, I would warmly recommend to visit and take the audio guide BEFORE going to the temples. Very interesting and informative. It will take you a good 2-3 hours if you are thorough. You Monday want to nip out fluid a bite in between for not getting overwhelmed (just ask) though there isn't much choice in the shopping centre (overpriced shopping watering hole)
  • See this before you see any of the temples, we learnt that the hard way. Better yet, skip this, and use the $12 each entry fee to go towards the temple pass as really all you see in here is more statues and engravings etc from the temple sites. Worth it if you have expendable income/time to kill as you do learn some important things that would have improved the actual temple experience.
  • Despite its name, the museum is owned by non-government organization. So its quality of service is great and the entrance fee is relatively expensive. However, the collection is mostly original since the owner has cooperation with Cambodian government. The permanent exhibition gave you a 'dense' knowledge of Angkor history. It is recommended to visit the museum before you come to Angkor Archaeological Park, so you have some basic knowledges.
  • Very good museum, the description was accurate and enough deep to explain and to not be boring. The exposition covers the period between IX and XIII sec. B. C. and all the Khmer Empire, the population that lived in the Cambodian area. Impressively well conserved all the archaeological find. The only negative part is the scale model Angkor Was temple, a great idea but a too simply and uncomfortable realisation
  • Very nice museum that offers much information on Cambodia and its religion, way of life and history. The statues are beautiful and you get detailed information about them. We spent 2 hours there and felt ready to visit Angkor Wat the next day.
