Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island), Kep

3.8
#1 of 7 in Parks in Kep
Swing in a hammock under a palm tree shade in Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island), a tiny rustic 2 sq km (0.77 sq mi) island lying only 4 km (2 mi) off Kep. Its sandy, rock-studded stretches make a popular low-budget getaway, refreshingly free of electricity and motor vehicles. Come here for some peaceful swimming, or explore the excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities among the many coral reefs. If you've worked up an appetite, check out the fresh seafood eateries on the island's longest beach. Fishermen and cowherds run accommodations, some in wooden thatched houses built by convicts during the 1970s. Hired boats run regularly to the island from Kep. • We visited here with my daughter and husband. Booked the day trip through the hotel and was picked up by Tuk Tuk at 8.30am. The cost was 8USD each. So far so good. When we arrived at the pier after a ...  more »
  • Go your way, you don't miss a thing if you don't trip to Rabbit Island. After 20 minutes of rather nice crossing, you land on a lovely beach. Water is not transparent or turquoise and y'a of the wind, but it's cute. A few transat, a restaurant/bar, the masseuse... But as we like to explore, we decide to circumnavigate the island. Actually, assuming South has 700 m, he y' has a first Beach, or I challenge anyone to put a foot in the water so it's disgusting, we must also look out or my puts the feet because there is not only in the water but everywhere everywhere everywhere waste cans metal, sheet metal, plastic and other bag piece bottle... Decided to find a decent beach we decide to continue, saying that it must be the side folds exposed and that all waste must be the... well, not at all, after 30 min walk and the 3/4 of the island covered... There seems to be in an a open-air dump, it is so pity a place like that defiles this way... and these aren't tourists responsible for that, but rather the Cambodian whose side Green is the least of their worries. Run away! Nothing to see here.

  • If people are expecting a flash beach resort don’t bother, but if you want a fun place to swim in the ocean near Kep with good food/drinks it’s worth the boat trip. Our second time here and a great li...  more »

  • Don't spread the word.. this is a little paradise. Very simple and perfect to relax. Enjoy a barbecue on the beach, swim and chill-out.
  • A great island for the day. Take a walk around the island takes S few hours. Path not clear in places but good fun. It is a bit of a party island with lots of sunburnt bodies but for a day trip it is great. Food reasonably priced. Boats really well organised. A lot of rubbish around the edges of the island the only negative.
  • I live here from December until April. It is just fantastic. Quiet, good food, lovely people and delicious cocktails. A magic place with energetic fibes.
  • Not really ... but yes, it is the best beach in Kep (due to nothing there). I've expected quiet island with clean beaches and place to snorkel. Nothing of it. The only usable beach is where you land by boat. This one is nice sandy beach and good for swimming in the sea. There is nothing there for snorkeling. Other beaches (counterclockwise from main where you land): - "Small" or "Stone" beach: well, fishermen are occupying this one and heavy diggers and trucks are leveling ground for construction site, - nice sandy beach full of trash as usually in Cambodia and heavy diggers and trucks are leveling ground for construction site, - "Coral" beach: it's algae farm now. Next is stony, shallow and mangrove seashore with humps of muddy dead algae. Be warned: I've not gone far on the remote beaches but have seen many dead sea urchin shells. Walk around the island: skip it. Unless you are true dedicated nature lover ... Nothing there and path is not maintained and overgrown in few parts. It's leading partially through bushes & mangroves (shoes and long trousers recommended) and through wet smelly humps (like mud) of rotting algae on "Coral Beach" (algae farm bay - you have to stump upon coral to find it under the water if there is any). I wish I know it before so I just spend a chill out day on beach where boats are landing.
  • Definitely worth going if staying in Kep. If you are planning to go to Cambodia & thinking where to spend time on the beach probably Koh rong island & Sianoukville are the better options

Where to stay in Kep

Kep has a set of accommodations to suit a range of budgets and styles. The area around the crab market has the greatest choice of options, with aged villas turned into guesthouses both luxury and standard, and resorts of bungalows and stand-alone villas. Some of the more budget-friendly resorts have bungalows with shared bathrooms and limited amenities, while the more luxurious resorts center on old French colonial villas and pack in extras, such as restaurants, pools, and spas. Follow the coastal road down to Kep Beach for the same accommodation types, but with fewer choices.
