Kep Crab Market, Kep

3.7
#4 of 16 in Things to do in Kep
At Kep Crab Market, nestled right up against the seashore, the fishermen come to sell fresh crabs caught using wooden traps. Most of the action takes place on the beach overlooking the ocean full of small boats, while small improvised shacks in the background sell local meals, vegetables, fruits, and spices. Adjacent to the market, find an array of wooden restaurants on stilts. Enjoy fresh seafood, including snapper, tuna, river fish, calamari, and the famous blue pepper crab. As well as local specialties, many of the restaurants also serve international cuisine. Finish off the day with a glass of wine and a view of the sun setting over the endless horizon. • One piece of advice: go to the market to the crabs to eat there. Not just for a few pictures, but for the experience, really. Unique and much more authentic than to go eat the crabs of Kep in one of the restaurants nearby. Ready (s)? Go to the waterfront, on the pontoon. Get busted by the one (e) salesman (se) s of crabs who will tell you that his crabs are freshest. It will get out you them of the water, in their basket, still alive, and made your choice. Count 750gr of crab per person for a meal (or 1 kg per person for a very hearty meal): male or female (the Khmer prefer females for eggs, take males, cheaper and with more flesh!), big or small. Bend, kneel, choose the crabs yourself: they are wriggling, with a beautiful color? Banco! Negotiate the price (always with a smile, huh!), very fluctuating from one day to the other according to fishing and demand (30,000 riels $ 7.50 per kilo is a good average), and once the case is concluded, will cook, water either in a pan with pepper (p) read Dear, + $ 1.25 for cooking, but delicious!) and go eat on one of the tables on the market. I already can't wait to go back... Enjoy your meal!

  • Authentic market where locals and tourists mix. Of course we pay certainly more expensive than the premises but in all countries is the same. Fish, crab, shrimp or cuttlefish are grilled or fried in a pan. We took a big fish for 2 (2kg for $ 4), my girls took a small fish ($2) and a skewer of shrimp (6 for $ 2 overpriced it) 3 large portions of rice ($ 0.25 one). To sit in a different place of purchase, you need to consume. We had 2 drinks for $ 4 at 1 a. Total fish and shrimp very tasty $ 10.75 to 4. In comparison, the Magic Crab, just next door, we had $ 33.50 for lower value. You can see my opinion on it.

  • Good to come here. Not only for buying or selling but to learn more about the local life. Crab here is very fresh, just caught from the sea.  more »

  • A really local places where they are happy for tourists to visit and learn about \ eat crab! Probably the best place in Cambodia to eat crab too! Interesting seeing how they catch them in the bamboo baskets.
  • We travelled to the crab market just to enjoy the famous dish "Crab with Kampot green pepper". We went to Kimly Seafood Restaurant. Even though the weather was covered and rainy, we've enjoyed it a lot. It was delicious! You'll find plenty of other restaurants there!
  • Pros and cons here. Pros: you can buy fresh crab and get them cooked cheaply here. Cons: crabs are quite small and are being caught before they are ready. Know your crabs before you engage sellers.
  • Probably the only market in Cambodia where the fresh produce looks fresh. You can buy crab and they'll cook it right there in the wok for you. It tastes really nice. Also recommended is the squid they prepare with sweet chilly sauce, garlic, ginger, spring onion and local green peper. Delicious!
  • Interesting and unique place. Get there eay morning to avoid the crowds and get some great pics

Where to stay in Kep

Kep has a set of accommodations to suit a range of budgets and styles. The area around the crab market has the greatest choice of options, with aged villas turned into guesthouses both luxury and standard, and resorts of bungalows and stand-alone villas. Some of the more budget-friendly resorts have bungalows with shared bathrooms and limited amenities, while the more luxurious resorts center on old French colonial villas and pack in extras, such as restaurants, pools, and spas. Follow the coastal road down to Kep Beach for the same accommodation types, but with fewer choices.
