Wat Banan Temple, Battambang

4.1
#1 of 7 in Historic Sites in Battambang
Perched atop a hill looking over the Sanker River, Wat Banan Temple provides a secluded encounter with an ancient Angkor temple. Climb up nearly 400 steep cobbled steps, reaching five monumental towers consecrated as a Buddhist shrine, thought to have been built sometime between the 10th and 13th centuries. Search for the few remaining carvings, best preserved on the central tower, depicting female spirits of the clouds and praying figures. On reaching the bottom of the hill, numerous food and drinks vendors greet you with welcome refreshments. • Bit of scooter ride out of Battambang town to get there but well worth it. Small entry fee, but free to explore once inside the park with no obvious restrictions. Be prepared for the usual stair climb...  more »

  • Good for culture view and also excersice because stair up to the top of the mountain. Some view from mountain to rice field feel fresh. Oh don't forget have fresh cool coconut and buy local fruit home.
  • Wat Banan is located on the top of a hill. More than 100 steps has to climbed up to reach the ancient temple. On the top you find the ruins of a beautiful ensemble of towers. Some workers are busy to reconstruct and mantain the temples. There is a nice view into the valley. The entrance fee is 2$. On the ground are some boths with food and drinks and you can rest from the tiring climbing.
  • One of the tourist attractions in Battambang. Popular for both locals and internationals. Stairs are steep, especially the last part of the top, requiring more efforts. But you will enjoy ancient architectures, the breeze and the landscape when you are on the top.
  • This temple located on the top of Banan mountain which is 25 km south of Battambang City. It was built during the Angkor-era. You will see the five temples and beautiful views of rice fields and small villages surrounding. The place is a must-visit tourism site in Battambang province.
  • Nice temple, super busy at Khmer New Year. There’s a lot of very steep steps but there are drinks sellers up the top (and child beggars who will fan you and demand money - don’t give it to them, you’re not helping). The view from the top is worth the climb. Bamboo train is now also near Banan Temple.
