Wat Banan Temple, Battambang
(3.9/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Perched atop a hill looking over the Sanker River, Wat Banan Temple provides a secluded encounter with an ancient Angkor temple. Climb up nearly 400 steep cobbled steps, reaching five monumental towers consecrated as a Buddhist shrine, thought to have been built sometime between the 10th and 13th centuries. Search for the few remaining carvings, best preserved on the central tower, depicting female spirits of the clouds and praying figures. On reaching the bottom of the hill, numerous food and drinks vendors greet you with welcome refreshments. A visit to Wat Banan Temple represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Battambang trip builder to plot your vacation.

  • There's 358 steps to climb but it's worth it to see the temple, unless you are templed out of course. This temple is part of the tour the tuk tuk driver will take you on so might as well enjoy it.
  • 350 steps as stated in the guides. Nice upstairs. Temple preserved from tourism. See Angkor before or after.

  • Very interested temple
  • I'm about 11km from the temple. it's on the Banon mountain.
  • About 20 kilometres out of town, Banan Temple is a good example of the Khmer architecture that this region is well known for. It was built in the eleventh century and involves a long climb to the top up a steep staircase. It’s quite small at the top but has great views of the surrounding area.
  • Near my house and amazing place.
  • Simple temple, but worth trying to climb up
