Wat Banan Temple, Battambang

(340+ reviews on the web)
Historic Site Religious Site
Perched atop a hill looking over the Sanker River, Wat Banan Temple provides a secluded encounter with an ancient Angkor temple. Climb up nearly 400 steep cobbled steps, reaching five monumental towers consecrated as a Buddhist shrine, thought to have been built sometime between the 10th and 13th centuries. Search for the few remaining carvings, best preserved on the central tower, depicting female spirits of the clouds and praying figures. On reaching the bottom of the hill, numerous food and drinks vendors greet you with welcome refreshments. A visit to Wat Banan Temple represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Battambang trip builder to plot your vacation.

  • We visited Wat Banan today. It was very quiet with hardly any people. There are many, many stairs! It was hard work to get to the top, but worth it. The ruins are lovely to see. Not very big, but you ...  more »

  • There are a bunch of laterirte temples on a very steep hill. The temples have no sculptures or details whatsoever and are in ruins due to lack of conservation efforts. You have to climb around 360 very steep steps to reach the top, which is not worth what's up there to see. Felt it was more a couple's and students hangout place rather than a tourist destination.
  • Very steep hill! Nice to challenge yourself a bit πŸ˜‰
  • It's a wonderful place to relax and eat good food. The price is also affordable.
