Wat Banan Temple, Battambang

4.0
#1 of 6 in Historic Sites in Battambang
Perched atop a hill looking over the Sanker River, Wat Banan Temple provides a secluded encounter with an ancient Angkor temple. Climb up nearly 400 steep cobbled steps, reaching five monumental towers consecrated as a Buddhist shrine, thought to have been built sometime between the 10th and 13th centuries. Search for the few remaining carvings, best preserved on the central tower, depicting female spirits of the clouds and praying figures. On reaching the bottom of the hill, numerous food and drinks vendors greet you with welcome refreshments. A visit to Wat Banan Temple represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Battambang trip builder to plot your vacation.

A long and arduous ascent of steps leads to a hill with a beautiful temple discreetly preserved. Avoid the descent to "cave": dangerous and not at all interesting

There are a bunch of laterirte temples on a very steep hill. The temples have no sculptures or details whatsoever and are in ruins due to lack of conservation efforts. You have to climb around 360 very steep steps to reach the top, which is not worth what's up there to see. Felt it was more a couple's and students hangout place rather than a tourist destination.

It's a wonderful place to relax and eat good food. The price is also affordable.
