Phnom Sampeau, Battambang

(3.8/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
The killing caves of Phnom Sampeau give a grim insight into the atrocities committed by one of history's most brutal regimes, the Khmer Rouge. Enter the temple built in the complex of caverns to begin the chilling tour. The cool breeze blowing through the caves, the golden reclining Buddha statue, and the cages containing victims' bones create a haunting atmosphere. Outside, see a mannequin display depicting the brutal and creative ways the government used to torture people, a harrowing finish to the cave experience. Work out when and for how long to visit Phnom Sampeau and other Battambang attractions using our handy Battambang trip itinerary planner.

  • Start at the end of the car park. Walk up by the road (others went by motor bike or truck at a fee of course) - wear comfortable shoes and take plenty of water. It was hot & steep but worth it. Lovely...  more »
  • Several interesting points: the cave in which the Khmer Rouge massacred thousands of innocent people. It is a place of meditation for the Cambodians themselves who have been particularly affected by the massacres in there region of Battambang. The view of rice fields and the border with the Thailand is superb. And to complete the flight of bats remains a real local curiosity.
