Track down hippos and sitatungas (swamp antelopes) in their natural habitat on a trip through Rusizi National Park. With luck, you'll also see flamingos strolling in the shallow ends of the river that runs through the park. Keep your eye out for the notorious Gustave, a crocodile believed to have killed hundreds of people in his lifetime. He rarely makes an appearance, but those sightings are once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Bujumbura holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Rusizi National Park and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Did a boat tour on the River starting from the road to Gatumba. On the river banks you can see lots of Hippos and birds, the Congolese mountains in the back and then its pretty cool to see the red...

  • I was in Bujumbura on business, and at the end of my trip, my colleagues took me to Rusizi National Park. It's about a 20 minute drive north-west of Bujumbura, not far from the border with the DRC...

  • I would recommend the boat trip up the Rusizi river. The wildlife is amazing and shows real Africa. The transition from a brown river to a blue tanganika lake is unbelievable.

  • Great place to see rhinos and many water birds. Boat rides are avaliable. The rates are different if you do not speak French. Not too much. I got charged BF 35000 for a walk in the park. However the ranger was kind enough to provide me with waterproof knee lengh shoes which is a must here.
  • The National Park of Rusizi is the closest national park to the economic capital city Bujumbura. And the park itself is traversed by one of the largest river In Burundi called the Rusizi River . In that national park you can enjoy a diversified environment on an affordable price plus a guide and see the large population of hippopotamuses and crocodiles
  • Boarder point to Congo. Very beautiful
  • Three star hotel
  • Park almost flooded by the major flooding of the river. A motorized boat trip to the meeting between the river and the lake is just relaxing. We see a few family hippopotamuses among which we find some very huge ones. We also see some birds but it is almost impossible to get close. It is relevant to visit the park during the season when it is possible to do so on foot. No crocodiles seen when we were there even if their presence is confirmed by the managers of the Park. The exit on the river is well secured with life jackets for everyone.
