Baba Vida Fortress, Vidin

Must see · Specialty Museum · Museum
Largely preserved from the 10th century, Baba Vida Fortress was rebuilt numerous times and bears scars from Byzantine, Hungarian, and Ottoman attacks. According to legend, it was the home of Vida, the eldest daughter of King Vidin. Stories relate that she refused to get married, built this castle instead, and spent the rest of her lonely life inside. However, according to history books, this was a military structure. Take a look at some of the fort's main towers and find terraces with cannons. Step inside the former prison where you'll witness a recreated scene of an executioner with a prisoner and see numerous medieval torture devices. Occasionally this site hosts cultural events and serves as a backdrop for movie scenes. • Interesting history. The fortress is in very good shape. Small in comparison to other fortresses along the Danube. Small charge to get in and it goes toward preservation. Worth the walk if you have the time.
  • A beautiful, beautiful fortress which is extremely well preserved. The fortress has an outer and an inner yard, with several rooms in the inner yard. There's an altar room, a dungeon, and two exhibition rooms. Hidden winding staircases and broad paths lead up to a big field from where you can access the lookouts and two square towers. The views of the Danube River are breathtaking! There's no toilet on the fortress premises, the place is not wheelchair accessible, and the cobbled paths are a bit slippery, so be careful. The entrance fee is 4 BGN for adults and 2 BGN for children, students, and pensioners. Definitely recommend!
  • The best preserved ancient fortress in Bulgaria with exciting history. It's a must-visit spot in the historical Bulgarian town by the Danube, the town of Vidin. The fortress is open for visitors all the year round. It also is the venue for various open air events. Top views over the great river, too.
  • A very well-preserved castle. Worthy to see.
  • The place is very well preserved and maintained mediaeval fortress. The vistas from the towers are great, highly recommended for visiting.
