4.4/5 based on 75+ reviews on the web
Largely preserved from the 10th century, Baba Vida Fortress was rebuilt numerous times and bears scars from Byzantine, Hungarian, and Ottoman attacks. According to legend, it was the home of Vida, the eldest daughter of King Vidin. Stories relate that she refused to get married, built this castle instead, and spent the rest of her lonely life inside. However, according to history books, this was a military structure. Take a look at some of the fort's main towers and find terraces with cannons. Step inside the former prison where you'll witness a recreated scene of an executioner with a prisoner and see numerous medieval torture devices. Occasionally this site hosts cultural events and serves as a backdrop for movie scenes. Make Baba Vida Fortress part of your personalized Vidin itinerary using our Vidin tour planner.

  • Apart from a great old fotress/castle, Baba Vida offers a small exhibition of photos of Vidin over roughly the last 100 years. Great to see how the city changed over time.
  • Gorgeous fortress! You should definitely visit the place, especially if you like historical buildings and castles. Baba Vida is a great monument of the glorious Bulgarian history!
  • Nice castle on the bank of Danube river.
  • Great historical fortress
  • If you like castles (and I do) this was a real treat. Make sure you don't let your tour bus leave without you . . . I did and had to walk back to my ship.
