Baba Vida Fortress, Vidin

4.4
#9 of 78 in Museums in Bulgaria
Largely preserved from the 10th century, Baba Vida Fortress was rebuilt numerous times and bears scars from Byzantine, Hungarian, and Ottoman attacks. According to legend, it was the home of Vida, the eldest daughter of King Vidin. Stories relate that she refused to get married, built this castle instead, and spent the rest of her lonely life inside. However, according to history books, this was a military structure. Take a look at some of the fort's main towers and find terraces with cannons. Step inside the former prison where you'll witness a recreated scene of an executioner with a prisoner and see numerous medieval torture devices. Occasionally this site hosts cultural events and serves as a backdrop for movie scenes. Make Baba Vida Fortress part of your personalized Vidin itinerary using our Vidin tour planner.

The fortress is visited during the trip by bus to Montenegro. In Vidin 9:00 sediment and stayed on vacation. Specially to go in this city makes no sense-it though and the old, but very humble. Have something to show for a couple of hours, the city is very ancient. There are some surviving elements of the fortified walls, the Museum, temples, a park, a large embankment on the Danube. The biggest attraction is the Castle. Entrance-2 BGN (Euro 4). But excursions there and any exhibits too. Theoretically, if we have enough arrogance-you can enter for free, and nobody checks at the entrance. Cashier a few sideways. In General, an ancient fortress, views of the Danube are good, but in fact is just a wall, which fully and in Ukraine, in the same Hotin much bigger and prettier. Walk, walk-from power for half an hour. If you happened to fate to go there all day-the recommend restaurant on the big ship on the waterfront-ginormous portions and very good prices, lower than in Ukraine-naedites for 50 UAH salad and meat with garnish and more juice just from the belly! By the way, in Bulgaria, like many where in Montenegro and Romania, many cafes and shops you can pay with a Visa card and Mastercard. Normal hryvnia card of their country. Operation occurs instantly, at the exchange rate of your bank. No loss on my salary card has not been disposed of as-in Ukraine, almost. So I recommend everyone to take a map.

This ancient fortress is well-preserved and almost entirely original, unlike many other similar sites. We recommend hiring a guide who will explain the different historical periods of the fortress.  more »
