Baba Vida Fortress, Vidin

4.4
#1 of 14 in Things to do in Vidin
Largely preserved from the 10th century, Baba Vida Fortress was rebuilt numerous times and bears scars from Byzantine, Hungarian, and Ottoman attacks. According to legend, it was the home of Vida, the eldest daughter of King Vidin. Stories relate that she refused to get married, built this castle instead, and spent the rest of her lonely life inside. However, according to history books, this was a military structure. Take a look at some of the fort's main towers and find terraces with cannons. Step inside the former prison where you'll witness a recreated scene of an executioner with a prisoner and see numerous medieval torture devices. Occasionally this site hosts cultural events and serves as a backdrop for movie scenes. • Well preserved fortress, last stronghold of Bulgarian before enslaving by the Turks. Buy at once ticket for BABA VIDA and museum Konak(4+1 lev).  more »

  • It's a good place to visit if it's on your way. However would not travel far just to see it. It is a place of history, but there are better things to see around Bulgaria.
  • I am not sure you can visit the inside of the building, but just by a stroll around is worth seeing.
  • That's a remarkable historical place. It's the only one fully preserved fortress, dating in Roman times with some additional structures. From the top of the fortress is revealed stunning view to the Denube River and the bridge between the cities of Vidin and Kalafat.
  • Fun to walk around and explore but not if you have to pay. The ticket office was empty when we went - had we paid we would have been a bit frustrated
  • Pretty well preserved fortress. Could use some more decoration but nothing to complain about. Pro tip for visitors: last Thursday of each month - no entry fee.
