Tsarevets Fortress, Veliko Tarnovo

Explore the archaeological site of a medieval town at Tsarevets Fortress. The fortress served as the Second Bulgarian Empire's strongest bulwark from 1185 to 1393, housing the royal and patriarchal palaces. It includes the remains of more than 400 houses, at least 22 churches, four monasteries, craftspeople's workshops, gates, and towers. You can see the foundations of the royal palace from which 22 successive kings ruled Bulgaria. View the city from the front steps of the Patriarch's Complex, then stop by the execution rock, from which traitors were pushed into the Yantra River. You also can visit a modern reconstruction of the medieval tower where Latin Emperor Baldwin I of Constantinople met his death as a Bulgarian prisoner. Ask about guided tours. • Yet another amazing fortress. You will have to walk quiet a lot to devour the whole beauty as this is quiet a large fort. Some breathtaking views from every corner of the fort...do not miss going on the top of the church tower to get a 360 view of the city around
  • Stepping in to Tsareves you step in try the time and experience this stunning history of the time. The complex is big and takes time to explore it but it is all worthy. The church is modern interpret and is interesting to visit. The view is breathtaking from any angle and any site.
  • Nice historical place with great view on the city. You need to bring your own water of food if you plan to stay longer because you can't buy them from inside the fortress. The benches are very rare.
  • Interesting historical place. Would have loved to see more info plaques around it. At the top there is a church with weird modern style murals inside
  • Incredible fortress. Almost impossible to describe. Be prepared for at least two hours of walking if you want to get the complete picture of both historical and sightseeing point of view. Bottles of water and some snacks are a must. If you are visiting with kids, keep an eye on them all the time since there are some very dangerous and steep places. The late evening light and sound multimedia show is also spectacular.
