Historic Site Military Facility
Explore the archaeological site of a medieval town at Tsarevets Fortress. The fortress served as the Second Bulgarian Empire's strongest bulwark from 1185 to 1393, housing the royal and patriarchal palaces. It includes the remains of more than 400 houses, at least 22 churches, four monasteries, craftspeople's workshops, gates, and towers. You can see the foundations of the royal palace from which 22 successive kings ruled Bulgaria. View the city from the front steps of the Patriarch's Complex, then stop by the execution rock, from which traitors were pushed into the Yantra River. You also can visit a modern reconstruction of the medieval tower where Latin Emperor Baldwin I of Constantinople met his death as a Bulgarian prisoner. Ask about guided tours. • We spent a leisurely 4 nights in V.T.........really could have spent less time. BUT we adored our jaunt to the Fortress! We took a taxi there from Hotel Gurko, so we could save our energy for the "hik...  more »
  • Of course, the fortress can be seen as the main reason for visiting the city. Previously, it makes sense to look at it from the side-for this you need to climb a mountain in the Park "Sveta Gora", where there is an observation deck (climb the stairs from the Asenam monument, which is located next to the Park). Fortress of the attend, if possible in the heat, not the morning-perfect. For the best panoramic views you need to spend on 2 LEVs per person to climb the lift to the top 18 m Tower.

  • This is a dramatic spot and worth the hike up the mountain. If you can read up on the history of the place it is incredible. One of the most resilient fortresses in Europe with layer upon layer of rui...  more »

  • One of the best fortifications I've seen in Europe. Recommend to go early in the morning to avoid the masses. Also, DO NOT forget to see the light show at night. I believe it starts at 8pm. 6 Lev entrance fee
  • A really nice place to get away and have some space from the town traffic . Take plenty of water , great views takes approx 2hrs to go around and see the church at the top. Think it was about £2.50 each to go in dogs allowed.
  • Very beautiful place. Full of history. You don't want to miss it.
  • The Tsarevets fortress in Veliko Tarnovo is a great place to visit. The night light and sound show is also interesting to see. This historic place is well maintained and it worth a visit. The view from the top is great.
  • Great historical place with many things to see:walls, ruins if building, tower church - all from the mighty history of Bulgaria. The views from here are breath taking. The night lighting show it's something you must visit... Absolutely amazing!
