Tsarevets, Veliko Tarnovo

Must see · Castle · Military Facility
Explore the archaeological site of a medieval town at Tsarevets. The fortress served as the Second Bulgarian Empire's strongest bulwark from 1185 to 1393, housing the royal and patriarchal palaces. It includes the remains of more than 400 houses, at least 22 churches, four monasteries, craftspeople's workshops, gates, and towers. You can see the foundations of the royal palace from which 22 successive kings ruled Bulgaria. View the city from the front steps of the Patriarch's Complex, then stop by the execution rock, from which traitors were pushed into the Yantra River. You also can visit a modern reconstruction of the medieval tower where Latin Emperor Baldwin I of Constantinople met his death as a Bulgarian prisoner. Ask about guided tours. • One of the best sightseeing places in Bulgaria. Of course, make sure to visit when it also offers the night Sound and Light show - a very nice experience. It is very interesting for people into archeology and history. I highly recommend coming here in spring when the weather is amazing!
  • Worth the money for paying 10lev...with this breathtaking view and it’s a huge site for you to explore... we’re very lucky to come here just perfect weather. So in love with the panoramic view, the surroundings- it’s just great time and great experience. Definitely a MUST visit when you’re in this town.
  • Outstanding architecture and historical landmark. Great for visiting and photography. The best seasons to visit are summer and early autumn. There are always problems with parking, so it's better to leave your car somewhere in the city. Interesting illumination show in the evening, but can be seen only from outside, cause opening hours are till 19:00.
  • The ruins of the Bulgarian capital, which was destroyed in the medieval ages. A place that breathes medieval history, heroism and treachery. One of the must visits in Bulgaria. In the summer it can get very hot and sunny, because it's mostly open air (ruins, remember :) ) so plan your visit accordingly.
  • I loved this fortress so much. It had important role in Bulgarian history, as it was the first capital of Bulgaria. The view is amazing. We had a perfect tourist guide and gave us all the information about the fortress, and showed us all the important sights of it.
