Stone Forest, Varna

4.3
#2 of 9 in Sightseeing in Varna
Ruin Tourist Spot
At Stone Forest, see natural rock formations resembling animals, frozen fountains, or cascades. The stone formations--mainly between 5 and 7 m (16 and 23 ft) high--do not have solid foundations, but are hollow and filled with sand. It seems as though the pillars are stuck into the surrounding sand. The prevailing theory is that this petrified forest was formed some 50 million years ago while it was still a part of the sea floor. Stone Forest is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Varna Edition.

  • Doesn't look like much from the road but once you get past the turn, you become surrounded by the strange rock formations created millions of years ago. Really interesting to explore the entire site. Best part was it's just two minutes off the highway.
  • Nature is beautiful. However, no offense, this is the first time I don't really get the hype about this place. The formation of these stones don't quite amaze me
  • Beautiful natural phenomenon - and great fun for kids as they can climb on the rocks and explore. We took a picnic (no food available to buy there).
  • Very easy to miss parking lot, if you go there without GPS. Historic place, interesting shaped stones, you can see stones from both sides of road.
  • Most amazing place in Bulgaria. Incredible natural phenomen. It's for sure must see. Be aeare that it is open 24/7 without entrance fee.

Where to stay in Varna

As Bulgaria's largest coastal town and the nexus of its burgeoning seaside vacation industry, Varna boasts a wide array of hotels and accommodations. The city center north of the train station features large, upscale hotels ranging from Communist-era concrete block-style buildings to more fanciful boutiques. Many offer swimming pools and plenty of amenities. To cut down on costs, consider staying in a guesthouse or bed and breakfast. Beachgoers will want to check out the range of hotels strung out north of the city, which extend a significant distance up the coast. However, keep in mind that staying right on the water will come with a heightened price tag.
