Aladzha Monastery, Varna

4.1
#3 of 9 in Sightseeing in Varna
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Aladzha Monastery is naturally carved from a vertical karst cliff surrounded by trees and bushes. The complex includes monks' cells, a refectory, kitchen, small cemetery church, crypt, and farm. Enter the chapel on the second level to explore partially ruined medieval frescoes from the 14th century. See the fragments of five monks' figures and the main mural depicting Jesus on a throne surrounded by flying angels. The monastery owes its name to these colorful murals, which are now almost destroyed. The Persian-Arabic word aladzha means motley. Where to stay in Varna

As Bulgaria's largest coastal town and the nexus of its burgeoning seaside vacation industry, Varna boasts a wide array of hotels and accommodations. The city center north of the train station features large, upscale hotels ranging from Communist-era concrete block-style buildings to more fanciful boutiques. Many offer swimming pools and plenty of amenities. To cut down on costs, consider staying in a guesthouse or bed and breakfast. Beachgoers will want to check out the range of hotels strung out north of the city, which extend a significant distance up the coast. However, keep in mind that staying right on the water will come with a heightened price tag.
