Aladzha Monastery, Varna

(4.1/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
Aladzha Monastery is naturally carved from a vertical karst cliff surrounded by trees and bushes. The complex includes monks' cells, a refectory, kitchen, small cemetery church, crypt, and farm. Enter the chapel on the second level to explore partially ruined medieval frescoes from the 14th century. See the fragments of five monks' figures and the main mural depicting Jesus on a throne surrounded by flying angels. The monastery owes its name to these colorful murals, which are now almost destroyed. The Persian-Arabic word aladzha means motley. • The pleasant atmosphere. More hot days and cool, shaded by tall pines. At the beginning of the tourist season there were almost no people. Allowed even with dogs, but on a leash. The upper monastery (wall) was closed due to renovation/restoration works. For lovers of walks through the forest there is a path to the catacombs. Nothing particularly notable, but it's nice to walk. Just be careful after rain may be dirty and slippery, plus we met a snake (natrix is possible. but a nice little)
