Aladzha Monastery, Varna

4.2
#3 of 10 in Historic Sites in Varna
Aladzha Monastery is naturally carved from a vertical karst cliff surrounded by trees and bushes. The complex includes monks' cells, a refectory, kitchen, small cemetery church, crypt, and farm. Enter the chapel on the second level to explore partially ruined medieval frescoes from the 14th century. See the fragments of five monks' figures and the main mural depicting Jesus on a throne surrounded by flying angels. The monastery owes its name to these colorful murals, which are now almost destroyed. The Persian-Arabic word aladzha means motley. • Went to walk from your hotel to the Aladja golden sands. The road stretches through the natural forest park. Posted routes. In hot weather to walk. Path gradually climbs uphill and brings to the monastery. When Rocky lived cells and devotees. Now this is the kind of Museum. It is interesting to wander through its territory, admire the flowers in the clubs. But nothing super outstanding No. However, people in cars to a stop. Well, one of the sights of golden sands. Information on the Internet is. I'm glad I went there.

  • Already several times visited the cave monastery. Unusual place with unusual energy. The monastery is situated on several levels. Simply amazed with the conditions in which they lived in ancient times: the place for hermits molenja embossed directly limestone wall, in the same cells, where they lived, a dining room, a place for burial. It is very difficult to accept that people could live here. Now on the site of the monastery is quiet, calm, beautiful nature.

  • Very interesting place to visit, although could become quite crowded during tourist season. The forest around is beautiful and worth a walk if you want to take a breather from the busy city. Definitely go to the catacombs, they are located about 700m from the monastery and a lovely forest path leads to them.
  • Too interesting, I got to know the history of this monastery, full of culture and history I liked it.
  • Amazing archeological site, accessible by car or through the forest trail (recommended!). Nice small museum on site.
  • Well, life of medieval monks must have been tough. Its not so big and you can see everything in 30-45 minutes, but it worth visit. Parking space is quite small and sometimes it may be difficult to park your car here.
  • It was interesting but much smaller than i've expected.

Where to stay in Varna

As Bulgaria's largest coastal town and the nexus of its burgeoning seaside vacation industry, Varna boasts a wide array of hotels and accommodations. The city center north of the train station features large, upscale hotels ranging from Communist-era concrete block-style buildings to more fanciful boutiques. Many offer swimming pools and plenty of amenities. To cut down on costs, consider staying in a guesthouse or bed and breakfast. Beachgoers will want to check out the range of hotels strung out north of the city, which extend a significant distance up the coast. However, keep in mind that staying right on the water will come with a heightened price tag.
