Zoo / Aquarium
Sofia Zoo in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, was founded by royal decree on 1 May 1888, and is the oldest and largest zoological garden in southeastern Europe. It covers and, in March 2006, housed 4,850 animals representing 840 species.HistoryInitially, the zoo was located in the park of the former royal palace, with the primary attraction being a Eurasian black vulture caught in Bulgaria and exhibited in a cage in the garden. Later, pheasants and deer were added to the collection, but since the exhibits and facilities of the time proved inadequate to accommodate a pair of brown bears, Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria ordered a grant of land to be awarded to Sofia Zoo on the grounds of the former botanical garden, then in the outskirts of the city.Sofia Zoo's exhibition of animals constantly increased, with both local and foreign species being added, most notably a pair of lions in 1892, which were housed in a former stable and a lion cub was born the same year.Between 1893 and 1895, new cages and buildings were constructed to accommodate the ever-increasing collection of birds and mammals, including a solid three-room stone building in the back of the terrain designed to be inhabited by bears (1894), a pool where a few pink-backed pelicans lived, a building to accommodate pheasants and another one for eagles (1895).

  • No zoos are good for the animals, but the state of Sofia one is scary. Smelly, little animals whatsoever, and the ones left look sad and scared.  more »
  • The most poorly maintained zoo I've been too. Although it's always crowded, walking is not very pleasant. The animals look sad and suffered, some look scared.  more »

  • A very large zoo with a lot of animals. In the winter they are most likely asleep in their cages. Nevertheless it was a great experience. Some cages may become bigger. The birds do not have any room to fly and the hippo seems really bored.
  • Far from the best zoo I've ever visited. Too much concrete and caging situations. Sad animals.
  • If you can get over the fact that these animals are in cages and are not living in the best of conditions, it's definitely worth a visit for selfish reasons because you will probably never have the opportunity to be that close to a lion or tiger in your lifetime. I visited twice and spent multiple hours in the lion and tiger enclosure because it was terrifying and fascinating. I watched them being fed and could hear the tiger tearing bones, it was quite surreal to comprehend how quickly something so close could kill a human. Anyway on a more positive note, the cost of the ticket is only 4 lev so I'd wholeheartedly recommend going just for the lions and tigers. I think the money also contributes to helping feed the animals. They have everything (bears, panthers, hippos, rhinos, elephants etc) so it's an especially good way of entertaining children.
  • Could be a very good zoo but is poorly funded. You can see the animals well, though. Worth a trip, very inexpensive. Do it in the summer, though.
  • Poor zoo... there are reconstructions going on however currently it looks sad! Hopefully it will get better soon for the animals.
