Vitosha, Sofia

4.6
#1 of 140 in Parks in Bulgaria
Ski and hike at Vitosha, the oldest nature park in the Balkans. The mountain offers huge skiing areas and schools for all levels. The 1930s' meteorological station at the top serves as a shelter for hikers. At a biosphere preserve called the Golden Bridges, a ribbon of huge rocks runs down the mountainside in a "stone river." The mountain is easily accessible via bus lines and a funicular. Note that the weather is very changeable. The hotels have low prices but limited facilities. • We came on the day that all the lifts closed, so we went to aleko and from there climbed red check for E4. The two big boys 5, 7 and climbed 2 carrier. The climb took about three hours with several pauses to hatashshot. We had a long break at the Summit and there plenty of room for the pillow frenzy. In the cabin there are excellent soups and crepes. The drop down was easier and faster and lasted about an hour and a half. For the raspberry and achmnity! Pleasure! Recommend to stick to the path, walk it relief.

  • We were like 20 people on the Vitosha Mountain, the road is good, from the bottom till some point. It's nice, a place that you can visit anytime.  more »
  • Good backdrop to the city. Problem is the haze during summer days.....at least the four August days we were in the area.  more »

  • Both the road to the mountain ad hiking the mountain is something you have to try. Going with the car up you see many nice local places you can visit. And hiking is not as easy as most mountains, with many small and dangerous paths to go to the top. Especially mid-way there are some tricky parts. Atleast if you don't take the tourist way.
  • Vitosha is the safe haven for overworked people from the capital. It takes up to half an hour to exit Sofia and walk up the beautiful mountain pathways. You will quickly notice the difference in air quality and if the day is clear enough, you can catch a beautiful view of the smog hovering above Sofia.
  • You can't leave Sofia until you have visited this mountain. From the city centre, take bus number 88 then change to 123 to get to the lower cable car station in Simeonovo. Then take the Simeonovo Cable Car to get to the top of the mountain (8lv for students, both way). There are few stations on the top but don't jump off from the cable car until you reach the last station. The journey lasted approximately for 30minutes. I really enjoy it and that was the most enjoyable visit that me and my friend had apart from some bad encounters while we were at Sofia!
  • Hustle and bustle place very famous amoung youth with lots of cafes and restaurants. I would like to visit in the evening time
  • Snow center with a lot facilities, lifts and a lot restaurants. Perfect even for very young skiers ☺
