Sveta Petka Samardjiyska, Sofia

(3.4/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
The miniature Orthodox church Sveta Petka Samardjiyska reflects a humble style due to the Ottoman rule that there could be no churches taller than houses. The largely ruined structure lies at an important public square among large modern buildings and roads. Its walls are crumbling, and the frescoes on the interior have faded a great deal. The size of the entire object is about 70 sq m (750 sq ft). Observe its old terra cotta roof tiles, reminiscent of typical village houses. Snap photos of this small religious object from the early Ottoman era surreally juxtaposed against the urban surroundings. • Constantly found closed at any time of the day, the Church is located exactly opposite the statue of Sofia, below the street level. The exterior, modesto, I was not imporessionato. Shame not knowing if and when it is open it:(

  • Who before did not think carefully read through about the hidden "hole" of the Church, will probably slightly amazed by its unusual location. Surrounded by a very modern Metro the monument looks like a doklejony from another world. And indeed it is. Quiet, not moving as all the people around, giving a respite. It is worth to stay in this place though for a moment.

  • Located at a crossing of roads, surrounded of ruins and nearly absorbed by several constructions... appears this tiny church, of them more ancient of Sofia. Accessible by a passage underground, his ship allows just a capacity superior to 20 people. Its passages narrow full of icons, candles and that touch archaic it make worthy of a small stop on the road.
