Sveta Petka Samardjiyska, Sofia
(3.3/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
The miniature Orthodox church Sveta Petka Samardjiyska reflects a humble style due to the Ottoman rule that there could be no churches taller than houses. The largely ruined structure lies at an important public square among large modern buildings and roads. Its walls are crumbling, and the frescoes on the interior have faded a great deal. The size of the entire object is about 70 sq m (750 sq ft). Observe its old terra cotta roof tiles, reminiscent of typical village houses. Snap photos of this small religious object from the early Ottoman era surreally juxtaposed against the urban surroundings. • A small medieval cerkvushechka with a funny name Petka Light how would spruce-fir fits in modern buildings. She herself was built somewhere in the 11st century and stands on Roman foundations. Inside ate 16 century frescos are visible. The church operates. But during our excursion service was not and we can freely view it. Very pleased with the attitude of Bulgarians to his Antiquities.

  • Tried unsuccessfully to gain entrance on several occasions. It seems you need to be Orthodox to gain entrance at limited times of services. Very interesting history.
